I have heard a briefly WX700 in a home theater demo. It wasn't the tightest thing I have heard, but boy it had output! I don't think I have heard anything that matches the output for a lower price. It definitely has more low end output than the WM500. Anybody else have any info on this model?
Angus, I saw the Velodynes at CC, too. Nice rig. It looks like they are discounting them. I think they are like $999 now. Not a bad deal. That Velo subwoofer is very cool - it is like the HGS series stuff. I think if the issue is Velo vs. Bose, it's a no brainer.
Richie, If you like Polk, but can't quite swing the RTi stuff, you might want to look at purchasing the R series stuff from Circuit City. They have a one year upgrade policy that allows you to apply the full value of the older speakers to an upgrade. Could be worth it for someone in your...
Brent, As has been stated above, Monster makes upgrade wires for the Sony Dreamsystems. I think they might even make just the connectors, so you can roll your own. I have heard an aquaintance's Sony Dreamsystem that was upgraded with the Monster kit, and it did sound a little better. Not...
I too, am skeptical, but SRT actually does have a good name in professional sound reinforcement. They supply subwoofers to many theaters and theme parks. They must have something on the ball. This model looks like a smaller home unit, but I have seen some of their professional stuff, and those...
Interesting thread. I know Sony ES and Onkyo also have integrated DVD/Receivers. Does anyone have any experience with either of those models? They seem like a great solution for the bedroom. Add a decent set of inexpensive speakers and you have a "Home-Theater-In-A-Box Killer".
Fredrick J, Just a tip, Polk is running their "Free Sub" promo again right now. You can get a free PSW 202 with the purchase of $499.99 in Polk speakers. I know Circuit City will let you a plly that credit towards a better Polk sub (like the 303). It could save you some serious cash. Happy hunting.
Deepak, I am familiar with the Pioneer SH line. While not quite audiophile grade speakers, they are surprisingly decent for the money. The 453 has a single 6 inch woofer and a passive radiator. You will definitely want to try a sub with them.
John, You are right. I have heard the X series speakers (on ES electronics) and actually thought they were very good. They look phenomenal in person. I also seem to recall some radically expensive Sony speakers from the early 90s. Something like $10-15K a pair. I have to believe that if they...
Tim, You are probably right on the amp info and cabinet info. I happened to be talking to an Infinity rep about the Alphas a few months back, and that was what I recalled about the specs. At the time, the sub did not yet exist. It seems they originally had a smaller 8 inch sub in Europe that...
Tim, The Alpha1200 is the same driver and cabinet volume as the IL120 was. It just steps down to a 400watt (peak) amp from an 800watt. Not a bad deal. As far as Alpha being a step down from Interlude, I am not sure that is exactly a fair statement. The better Interlude models were powered, and...
Interesting. I am just curious why it is that Asian (Japanese) companies are preceived as making inferior speakers? I am sure most Asian manufacturers would be capable of building phenomenal speakers if they put their minds and resources to it. On the other hand, quite a few of the beloved...
I use a Sheffield Labs/XLO Burn-In CD. It has a variety of test and burn-in tracks, but it has a combination pink noise/warble tone track that seems to work quite well. Guy has the right idea about placing them face to face (almost touching) and covering them with a towel, but I would also...
Very cool design Dave! Back when I was in college, I worked at an audio shop. I had a friend that built a couch riser with a pair of twelves. It rocked even back in the Pro-Logic days! I also saw another long thin box with four 10s that was designed to sit behind a couch. It didn't sound very...
Alpha is a line that Infinity brought over from Europe. If you go to their international website, they have a lot of info posted. Also, I have seen and heard them at my local Circuit City, so you might want to check there, too. They seem quite nice.
Debbie K/Husband, One other option: It sounds like you purchased the speakers at Circuit City. If you did, remember they have a one year speaker trade up policy. If money is tight now, you can make due for a while, and then trade the Onkyos in for full credit towards an upgrade. Not bad. By the...
Actually, the 6700 does sound a little better than the 6600 in my opinion. The satellites are physically a little larger, and they incorporate a pretty ingenious version of the Power Port system they use on their larger speakers. That should give them a little better mid-bass (what little...
Iver, your advice about choosing components is generally correct. However, I must admit that I was blown away by the Onkyo 650 system. For $500, the receiver is pretty strong, and the speaker pack is legit. Check it out some time. The speakers are MTM two-ways front and center, and small two-way...
Not to pile on, but I have been through Bose sales training and Oscar, you are touting the wrong technology. I would hope that a Bose Sales Rep would be able to get his technologies correct. Video Stage 5 is the proprietary 5.1 processing technology Bose uses in their surround systems - the Bose...
High SPL in a car is fairly easy. Low bass in a car is one thing you get for pretty close to free. Depending on the sanctioning body, the world records for most power classes these days are over 160 dB. There have been some instances where vehicles have hit over 170 dB, but the measuring...
Doug, Polk just announced the LCi In-walls at CEDIA. These are In-wall speakers that use LSi-type drivers and should be voice matched to the LSis. I am not sure when they are shipping, however. You may want to try the Club Polk forum or email Polk customer service.
Jay and Steve, I currently own LSi9s and an LSi center. As you may have read elsewhewre, the LSis are a great sounding speaker and an outstanding value. They like a little juice, and can be a bit of a tough load for some amps, but those Rotels should have no problems. As for the sound compared...
David, Where in VA did you find your sonotube? i am have trouble locating anything larger than 12" here in Richmond. BTW, I notice you are a fellow Hokie. Tech football is just around the corner! I can't wait!
I was looking in the 4-5 cu ft range ported, so I assumed the PR box would be roughly the same. I guess my main issue with PRs is tuning. Can anyone recommend some good reading on basic PR tuning techniques/philosophies? One other question: I know the drivers I am using don't have a lot of...
I apologize. The XMax is a whopping 8.31mm one way. Not great, I realize, but hard to turn down the deal on the woofers. If they don't work out, I may try something else, but for now, they should do.
Greetings folks. I have a couple of 15" drivers at my disposal, and I have been considering a ported design. After doing some reading, I may want something a little more compact, and I am considering a passive radiator design instead. I don't know much about PR enclosure design or tuning, and...
I have not heard the HTD speakers, but the HTS650 is a steal for the money. It sounds much better than most HTiBs I have heard. One other option: If you really like the Onkyo speakers, Circuit City sells them seperately (5 speakers and the sub, I think) for like $299. However, at that price, you...
