The analog RadioShack Sound Pressure Level Meter should be adequate for your purposes, and seems to be the preferred unit. I also avoid paying the extra $ for Monster cable, I'm not a "believer". BTW, most recommend 12G for speaker wire, but this does depend on the length of your runs. The...
I bought one last week at Audio King. They seem to be in quite short supply. So far I love it. Picture quality is excellent, as are the features. Does have mildly annoying "feature" of loading up and playing last disc on power up. Disc explorer is nice, but a bit slow. Keyboard input is...
It's strongly dependent on the competence of your local authorized service center. My repair for ticking took about 3 weeks. The separate "repair" for the audio dropouts took my service center about 6 weeks (partly the fault of Onkyo). If your unit exhibits audio dropouts with certain DVD DD...
Got my receiver back today.
Played 10 minutes of JPIII in DDEX, no audio dropouts.
Harry Potter in DD on HBO tonight, no audio dropouts.
The upgrade chip seems to be working properly.
It's definitely worth the effort and wait to get the receiver fixed. I'm glad Onkyo came up with a...
Mike, So you're telling me I shouldn't expect my receiver back anytime soon. My unit has been in my authorized service center since Nov. 4, but they are only getting the replacement parts from Onkyo this week (so they tell me). From your post, it seems they will have several more steps to go...
I actually feel that the difficulties in getting proper service is not the biggest problem with this whole fiasco (including audio dropouts and ticking). Onkyo should have recalled these receivers to correct these problems. The audio dropouts should be unacceptable to anyone who owns these...
Exact same experience here. My unit has been in my service center since Nov. 4. Initially, they "fixed" the problem (and I clearly stated it was an upgrade chip for the dropout problem) in one week; but when I got the unit back, I immediately realized the "fix" was for the ticking problem, which...
Playback of DVD+R or DVD-R will be somewhat dependent on the brand of media, so it is hard to generalize. You may want to check out vcdhelp.com (link below). Look under the "DVD players" section. They have extensive data on media/format compatibility for a huge number of players, along with user...
Jose: I like my 797, but there are 3 major bugs (that I know of) with it. 1. Many units develop a ticking sound from one channel after a variable amount of usage. This requires the unit be repaired. At least early on, the time in the repair shop could be lengthy (2 months) due to parts...
So far, DVD-R has been the better bet. Good compatibility with DVD players, more availability, cheaper discs. But watch out - I've heard that some large computer companies are starting to push DVD+R. The smoke hasn't cleared yet.
I experienced frequent DD audio dropouts on regular HBO broadcast of Shrek, via Dish Network with my Onkyo 797. I haven't seen any reports of similar problems with other receivers. Looks like another "bug" to add to the growing list of problems with the 797.
Thanks to my wife, I now have my unit back in working order. I love the receiver, but I shouldn't have had to go through this aggravation to get it repaired in a timely fashion. AT&T cellular once gave me similar customer service, and now I am a Verizon customer. Onkyo - I hope you are...
Matthew:
Hate to burst your bubble, but there are reports of the 898 also exhibiting this problem. Hopefully yours was manufactured after the problem was fixed (if it was).
Same problem here. Onkyo says 7 week wait to ship part. My wife called Onkyo and left a threatening message with a manager. Manager called me back - they've found the required part and are shipping it to my service center ASAP.
I'm not holding my breath.
Matthew:
1. The ticking problem in my unit did not develop until 4 months after I started using the receiver. This "time bomb" seems to develop after an unpredictable amount of usage. What happens if this problem develops AFTER the warranty expires?? I'd be sweating if my warranty expired...
I'd like to share my recent experience with Onkyo service, particularly for those of you considering one of their products.
One week ago, I brought my Onkyo 797 to an authorized local repair center to fix the well known ticking problem. Now I am told by the repair center that it will take 7...
Check out hotfiles.com. Do a search for "sound level" or "sound meter" and you will find some freeware and demo apps. One I tried, by SoundForge, DXVUMeter, worked ok with my laptop and a microphone, but I found that the mike I had was too directionally sensitive, and I ended up buying a...
That's correct, the DD EX surrounds/rear calibrate at 2dB higher.
I think I'll calibrate to DD EX and then manually adjust for DTS ES soundtracks.
Hmmm, wonder if I need a separate calibration for DD 5.1. This could get complicated.
I like your thinking; I'll do it that way.
On my system, my rear center and surrounds calibrate to 2dB difference between the DTS ES and DD EX tracks. I still wonder why this would be so.
When calibrating with the Sound and Vision Home Theater Tune-up DVD, I get consistently different calibration settings when using the DD EX tones and the DTS ES tones. My receiver, Onkyo 797, only stores one set of calibration factors.
Which calibration should I use? Does this mean I should be...
I am getting the itch to upgrade to a RP HDTV (50-60") in the near future, but I need some advice regarding DVI and other options.
1. When are sets with the HDCP/DV interface expected to be widely available? I am fairly reluctant to buying a new set now that doesn't have this interface (as...
Dust is usually not a problem. Because the disc spins at a high rate, the air currents generated by normal playing keeps the lens clean. You should watch at least two DVD's a day for optimal cleaning. :b
I also have the HTD level III Y-set, with an extra main speaker for a rear center of a 6.1 setup, using an Onkyo 797 receiver. As the others have posted, it's a great deal for the money. The subwoofer is the weak link in the setup. I find some of the dialogue to be harsh, but overall they...
I used to own an RCA DirecTV system. When I moved last year, I switched to DishNetwork. I wasn't unhappy with DirecTV; the DishNetwork programming packages seemed better and cheaper.
I have been fairly happy with the switch. I initially thought the picture was better with DishNetwork - less...
I have an Onkyo 797 and have experienced the DD5.1EX dropout problems with JPIII and PH - no problem because DTS soundtrack is fine. However, I just bought Atlantis (single disc edition), and have the same problem with the DD5.1EX soundtrack, and there is no DTS alternative on this edition. I...
