Hell Freezes Over, The Eagles: You will KNOW why you bought a DVD player when you hear the 5.1 surround sound from this baby!
The Fifth Element: Picture and sound (of course you bought a 5.1 surround-sound sytem to go with that DVD player) will make you want to never use a VCR again.
The...
Scott:
A single DVD player with a multi-CD would be good for me, too... it's only the CDs I want multiple of. I just don't feel like putting more real estate into two pieces of equipment instead of one.
Your set-up is probably giving you better results on both CD and DVD. I'm happy enough...
P.S. Progressive Scan... I'm still asking a zillion questions. I thought maybe if I had progressive scan, it would be better when I get a high-def TV or digital TV or one of the other names for "newer, better" TV.
Apparently, if the TV has the double in it, the DVD doesn't need to be...
Scott:
I got cold feet, after all the bad reviews (I even got the software upgrade to use once it arrived). A friend of mine has it, and he doesn't mind living with its quirks. In Canada, it's $1,000. Could have got it for $700. or so. Got a deal under $400. CAD for the Sony 600 changer...
Why are we doing this?
Front: Athena Audition F2
Centre: Athena Audition C1
Rear: Athena Audition B2 (maybe move up to F1 rears).
Sub: ... two Quest 880s
Larry:
I'd be interested to know more about your Sonus Faber speakers. I've tried what seems to be all the permutations of settings and wiring options, and seem to get more bass out of the main speakers by splitting the load with the sub. If I set mains to small, I get a thin sound that I...
Cindy:
Speakers, I have concluded, are the single-most personal taste component of the system. I want to hear the whole audible spectrum clearly, with responsive bass, but not boomy bass.
I tried bookshelves with sub-woofer, vs. towers, etc. For value, right now, an American buying Canadian...
Larry:
There's a thread on here called "Speakers - Large or Small Setting?" and I think I need to continue the ideas you are talking about (like the What Hi*Fi article) over there.
I went to the Athena site again last night, from home, and it was back to the way it used to be, with all the...
What I gather is...
The manufacturers say that break-in takes about 100 hours or less.
The folks who have noticed a difference, or measured it, all seem to say that it takes a few weeks. Maybe it takes that long to use the speakers for 100 or so hours.
I've had a pair on non-stop (24...
Sebastien:
See earlier post:
"...Future Shop as dealers for the Point 5 series and the Audition Series. Both are great. Other dealers sell the S-P line..."
The S-P line is the one that Centre Hi-Fi (and other dealers) carry.
If they are new, then maybe the Web site is being updated or something.
The Point 5s have the distinctive tweeter shape that the S-P docking subs have, but the AS do not. I started with a prejudice towards small speakers, but the Point 5s were the best-sounding of everything under $1,500. and...
Good coax sounds very good. Good fibre-optic is very expensive, compared to better coax, or the plastic fibre-optic cable.
I used Radio Shack fibre-optic and Acoustic Research Master series coax at the same time, then switched the input selector while a DVD played. There was more sound from...
Michael:
Last time I looked, their Web site listed Future Shop as dealers for the Point 5 series and the Audition Series. Both are great. Other dealers sell the S-P line, which is their high end. I have only heard them once, and was not overly impressed. The price is okay on the speakers, but...
Bryan:
I read a very specific recommendation to not use a test signal (or the hissing noise) to break in speakers. They recommend (in the Athena owners manual) music with a variety of sounds. Your objective is not to develop the part of your speakers that make hiss. You want to make them work...
Wow! The Athena speaker folks, who also make Energy speakers, had three distinct (all excellent value) speaker lines:
Point 5 (all six for $800 - $1,100. CAD)
Audition Series (two tower models, two bookshelf models, one centre)
The S-P series (three S models for front/rear, three subs, one...

The DVD 50 changer has ALL the features, specs, bells, whistles, and their great backlit remote. I ordered one this week.
I listened to the 40s and 60s at a very friendly dealer, who let me poke and prod every setting, placement, etc. The 40s sounded better to me (the Monitors were out of the question, sound is horribly dull and muffled).
To my mind, bigger is better for speakers, but I preferred the 40s...
Mike:
The Marantz or the Denon would definitely make your Engeries sound better! Now you have an excuse to upgrade.
I have also been wondering about break-in. Can I damage the speakers by turning them up (during the 50-100 hours that Athena (same manufacturer as Energy) recommend for...
Okay, I had to call Canadian American Express (the Canadian office of American Express)... have you heard of the Canadian Express card? Motto is: Don't leave home.
A Canadian American Express Corporate card (she doesn't know about a Canadian blue card) does not have any price guarantee...
I was happy with a Kenwood 509 (but then I wasn't looking for longevity).
I would like to read the SMR Home Theater info on receiver quality/longevity, etc., but the link is bad... "no DNS entry" error.
I tried permutations of the URL, but haven't found it yet. My own link to SMR was to a...
Harman-Kardon AVR520:
Dislikes:
The Logic 7 (sounds horrible), so I don't use it.
The remote is wonderfully backlit (great when it's dark to watch movies), except some keys have the text written onto the surface of the remote, and so are not backlit. It's easy enough to remember what most...
Thanks, Steve:
That's odd, about the Onkyo price. I never considered on-line purchase until the local prices on the Harman-Kardon AVR520 were so close to the retail $1,700. and someone at work said there's a guaranteed landed-at-your-door price of $1,100.
Best local price is $1,500. plus tax...
Steve K.H.:
Hi:
I'm also in Canada (near Montreal). May I ask who the dealer is that will give you prices like that (so good that Internet buying has lost its appeal)?
That Yamaha does not have ProLogic-II, which is very nice.
The Kenwood is very nice. I got it for $430. at Future Shop (it was on sale one week in November or December). It is very nice, plenty powerful, and a great value. The remote is very nice.
John:
Please let me know if you are still sane, or at least able to read.
I think that a couple of things have become "fuzzy"...
Dolby Digital can be passed (matrixed) in a stereo signal, whereas Dolby ProLogic is CONSTRUCTED from a stereo source. The ProLogic material does not exist until...
There are a couple of very interesting points raised here:
- The American Express 'benefits of membership'
- The outrageous price difference
I'm looking at a Harman-Kardon AVR520, Canadian Retail Price: $1,700. ($1,000 US)... can be had on-line for $630. US ($810. from onecall.com...
The way the Explorer 2000 cable decoder says to hook up seems weird, but it works. Where you have the RF cable going into the VCR, then back into the CB... well, the Explorer is configured that way, but the manual says, that to do what you want (bypass, etc.), you short-circuit that by running...
