Jeff, Some things I didn't show you about the pre-wiring that I did may come in useful to you so give me a phone call. I had HT contractors come to the house for wiring bids and I really picked their brains. So I have a lot of "invisible" wiring and thought put into future proofing the HT...
I enjoyed meeting everyone and playing host. Hopefully next time Wes, Casey, Richard and more can attend. I look forward to more of these events and hope that we can get some steam rolling in Utah with HT club interest. Scott

Ok,Nov 23rd it is. What do you all want to do? Talk HT? Watch a movie? If you want to watch a movie about 8:30 is good to start it as the kids are in bed by then. If you want to visit and talk HT, have some snacks, etc., then we can meet before then, say 7:30 or 8:00. So let me know what you all...
Wes - no, I haven't completed the other sonosub yet. I find that one provides PLENTY of bass and has never struggled at all at very loud levels. My house would be available for that evening. I don't have a lot of fancy seating because the money is all in the sound system, but should have...
My house in West Jordan is also available on a Saturday evening. Equipment: Tricked-out Mitsubushi 65" widescreen Zenith HDTV reciever Vandersteen based sound system Denon AVR-3801 reciever Homemade sonotube sub (24"X68") with Adcom amp
For Mitsubushi bigscreen owners: I suggest visiting www.hometheaterspot.com. That site has the best info on Mits bigscreen calibration. More info that you can imagine including how-to re-write the eeproms to "correct" the faulty factory settings.
I sit about 10 feet from my 65". So plenty of "room" for your TV.
JVC makes very good and highly recommended mid priced pro-scan DVD players. Also look at Panasonic, Pioneer, & Sony.
For budget price of $600 on speakers, I'd look at the Energy Take 5 and the Acoustic Research HC-? line...
Allen,
Avia is recorded at 10 db's "louder" than VE and most receiver tones. Therefore, you calibrate to 85 and not 75, however, both should "theoreticaly" result in the same output levels when playing a movie.
Vince,
Thank you for your information. I have asked many times on this forum for why my Denon's tones don't match Avia, which doesn't match VE, which doesn't match Optimode disks. None of them match each other, so my question has been what is reference if they aren't repeatable?. However, I...
For a differing viewpoint, I have calibrated with AVIA and Video Essentials and prefer the calibration using my Denon's tones. I found the so called "reference" level to result in uncomfortably loud and possibly speaker damaging levels when using those disks. The Denon's tones resulted in a...
Gary,
Recievers are almost never used to power a sub. The output on the sub is not amplified but is a line-level signal that you route via speaker wire into either a self powered sub or a separate amplifier purchased just for the purpose of driving the sub. I say "almost never" because you...
Sak,
These meters are also used by industrial hygiene and safety professionals to test sound levels in industrial settings. Try a safety supplier in your telephone listings. Though they may be more expensive from such a supplier.
Oh no, not another question about Monster cables! :)
Seriously, Bettercables.com makes what many consider to be the highest quality cables at reasonable prices. I prefer their stuff over Monster any day. Some rat shack stuff is pretty good to. I use Bettercables for the critical component...
Chris,
Wall mounting speakers should be your last option sonically, for any speakers other than dipoles which are designed to be installed this way. Speakers need "space" around them to sound their best, often the more the merrier. This doesn't apply to subs though where corner loading is...
The AVIA disk has a test pattern to properly set sharpness; to little is bad too. As a rough guide set at 1/4 to 1/3 of the range. At first the picture will appear soft to you. But with time, you will realize that it is better and results in better true resolution and a more "real" image. It...
Yes the new Mits sets have red push just as bad.
Yes you can build one, but why would anyone want to? You can buy one online for about $2.49 that works just as good. You also need a couple of adapters.
Gregg and any other Mitsubushi owners:
There is another forum (that shall remain nameless here) that has experts on Mits and tons in information on tweaking the sets right down to flashing the software on the motherboards to fix incorrect factory settings. If you want to really know your Mits...
Chris,
Yes, immediately turn down the brightness, contrast, and sharpness to about 1/3 the factory level as those levels will quickly generate another sale for the electronics store (a new TV that is).
The purple lines are most likely because your convergency is off. Convergency changes...
Jeremy makes a good point about the digital wire.
When I said get the cheap radio shack coax, I was really indicating that spending a lot on the more expensive toslink cable is a waste in my opinion. The radio shack digital coax cables seem to be of very high quality to me and reasonable...
I was lucky enough to attend with my wife for free (I was a volunteer so got free tickets). The event was so much fun and the bass was unbelievable. Locally I heard that the station cut out the fireworks at the end as it went past the hour. If so where you are, you missed the biggest...
Digital out is a must in a DVD player for the best quality sound as that will allow your receiver to do the decoding and minimize handling in analog. The player should have both digital coax and fiber (toslink) outs for the most versitality (coax is the cheaper way and just as good but some...
With a 7.1 system where would you put the extra wires? I don't think there has been any concrete recommendations for a 7.1 system and I think software to drive such a system would be many years away since there is hardly any software out now, after 2 years, that takes advantage of 6.1 systems...
Jimmy,
Cable for what?
Speaker wire?
Interconnects?
Digital coax?
Fiber?
Component cables?
Subwoofer wire?
There is lots of products made by Monster so please be more specific with your posts in the future. :)
I can tell you that on MY TV, using MY DVD player, that Bettercables.com...
By all means calibrate. An "out-of-the-box" RPTV looks horrible combared to a properly calibrated one. I makes a huge difference. You might be happy now, but do you know what you might be missing? Why settle for less than you could have.
I have done the following to my Mitsubushi TV and I...
I believe this is how it goes:
The 3:2 pulldown is done during playback because interlaced and progressive players each handle it differently. Interlaced players may have some image overlap due to the conversion, while progressive scan players use complicated software to properly combine the...
Guys! Whoa!
If I send a bunch of one's and zero's over a fiber optic line, then send the same one's and zero's over a digital coax line, which one will have the best sounding one's and zero's? Sounds silly now doesn't it. The answer is they should sound exactly the same. Digital is NOT like...
