    Eventual upgrade of receiver-DVD audio?

Formats like DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD are copyrighted formats that cannot currently be sent over bitstream or PCM digital connections. This is why you need to run analog audio out to your receiver. In order to utilize 5.1 playback with these formats, your receiver needs multichannel inputs.

    Sony DVPNS900V opinions/reviews?

I'm looking into possibly getting this player myself, even though I don't have an HDTV set yet. I like the fact that it has multichannel SACD playback, progressive scan, and DD/DTS decoders all in one package. Plus ES-quality construction to boot. I played with one at a local B&M, but at...

Does Playstation 2 have limitations as DVD player?

Another few limitations with using the PS2 as a DVD player include: 1. No progressive-scan. Interlaced output only. 2. No timer display, due to the very nature of a video game console. 3. Awkward operation of the player using a game controller; forces a lot of users to buy the optional...

Yamaha DSP Modes: Do you have a favorite?

I have an HTR-5280. I don't use the DSP modes too often, but my favorites are as follows: Movies: Enhanced and sometimes, 70mm Spectacle Stereo/Mono-only Programs: 5-Channel Stereo Surround TV Programs: Enhanced

should I get a progressive scan player at all?

You'll probably want to go with the 700P, because the only Sony DVD player in the ES line is the 9000ES, which is a single-disc player (and it also retails for $1500 or so). Another good model if you need to get Sony is the 900, which has ES-like construction with progressive scan...

    DVD Audio through Digital out

DVD-Audio is copyrighted (encrypted) to prevent copying it in its pure digital form. Thus, a DVD-A signal cannot be passed through a digital connection (yet, of course.....). You must run the 6-channel analog outputs from the player to your receiver or pre/pro. The same holds true for SACD.

    What Speakers Do You Own?

JBL S310 10" Floorstanding (fronts) JBL S-Center (center) JBL N24 4" Satellites (rears) JBL PB10 subwoofer (sadly, not hooked up; it pisses off my neighbor downstairs) These are being powered by a Yamaha HTR-5280 receiver.

    New Yamaha HTR-5490 Receiver

$599 is a smoking deal for that receiver, especially considering that J&R is an authorized dealer of Yamaha products. As far as I'm concerned, the 5490 has the best remote I've seen from a Yamaha in years. It's actually user-friendly and very functional. Instead of entering 3-digit...

    DTS vs 5.1

Basically, they are simply two competing surround formats. It's highly debatable which format actually sounds better; generally, it all depends on how much attention to quality is given to the soundtrack in the mixing room. I've heard very well-executed DTS soundtracks, as well as very bad...

Did JBL correct the PB12 reliability problems?

Hmmm.......where are you getting these reliability reports from? Most of the reviews I've seen on the PB12 have been rather positive. Their older line of subs, the PSW series, had lots of known problems with their amplifiers off the assembly line. That's why you see a lot of these models...

    Sony SACD 333ES manual

I don't believe that Sony actually posts PDF's of their manuals on their website. I've looked all over the place. You'll probably want to contact Sony instead to order a manual.

Troubles with RCA DVD Player any suggestions

You can look at it in one of two ways: 1. The lens could be out of alignment. If the player is still under warranty, I would see about getting the lens realigned. 2. You might have an older model that doesn't fare well with layer changes. If your movies are freezing in the middle...

CA70ES and Denon 3801, analog or digital?

Probably not. I'm willing to bet the DAC in that player is better than the one in your receiver. I don't own that same setup, but at least that's the case for me.

    Question about dolby digital sound

Most receivers have movie DSP modes that can be used on top of any surround format (i.e. ProLogic, DD, DTS). But if you prefer "unprocessed" sound, just switch your receiver to its normal surround setting.

    CD/Writer vs Stand Alone

I burn all of my audio CDs using my PC recorder. It's cheaper, you don't need to buy special "digital audio" CD-Rs to do it with, and it's more versatile. Perhaps the biggest advantage of having a standalone audio recorder is that it seamlessly integrates into your AV system. And technically...

Anyone hear of lenoxx sound dvd player?

If their DVD players are anything like their cheapie audio products, I'd say stay away. Even an Apex would be better than one of them.

    Onkyo 989 vs Yamaha RX-V1

I'm a big fan of Yamaha, but for the price, I'd grab the Onkyo. It's a lot more versatile and quite frankly, the RX-V1 is an aging model. There's supposed to be a new model replacing the RX-V1 (RX-V100???) that has DPLII and Neo:6. But I don't believe that new model will be...

    DVD Player for <$200

For the features you need, I'd recommend against the Toshiba SD-1700. It doesn't have CD-R/RW playback capability and it only has a coax output for digital audio. I think the only two Mike LS's original list that offer all the features you requested is the JVC. The two Panasonic models...

    Digital cable owners...audio question

Hmmm.... I didn't think it would be necessary to have both analog and digital cables connecting the box to the receiver. Dolby Digital should downmix to Dolby Surround 2.0 over a digital connection if a 5.1 soundtrack isn't available. At least that's how it is on DirecTV satellite.....

    s-video adapter?

S-video to coax? Not that I know of. Does the component in question only have an S-video output? No composite? I've seen S-video to composite converters, but in order to convert one of those signals to RF you'd need a modulator.

    Opinions on Sony 9000ES SACD/DVD?

Another model you might want to look into is the DVP-NS900, which retails for about $1000US. It has multi-channel SACD (the 9000ES, being an older component, only does stereo SACD), progressive scan, built-in Dolby Digital/DTS (if it matters), and the build quality to me seems very similar to...

    Sony DVP-NS300 any good?

There are better players for the money. I know this because I actually own that player. It doesn't have CD-R/RW compatibility (you have to buy the model up to get that), so no, it won't read burned VCDs (Sony players aren't known for their VCD playback performance anyway). The Panasonic...

    Digital Conection

I seriously doubt that it's actually going to happen any time soon, as long as the recording industry is worried about people reproducing perfect digital copies from these formats. With that in mind, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for another manufacturer besides Apex to release a good "swiss...

Final Speaker Advice on JBL. Ordering Tommorow

Yes, you might want to consider getting the NSP-1 + PB10 sub if you're going to be putting this system in a dorm room. Those N38s might piss off your neighbors..... :D What you really need to determine is what you'll be primarily using this system for. If it's mostly for home theater, the...

Which is more important here, lower THD or higher watts?

Well first of all, you're comparing an apple to an orange. The Onkyo TS-DX696 is a 5.1-channel receiver, while the new Yamaha HTR-5490 is a 6.1-channel receiver that is capable of decoding DTS-ES Discrete. Both models in question are capable of Pro Logic II, but the Yamaha can also do Neo6...
