Thanks for the reply, Mike. It may be a little more than I want to bite off, especially Linux as I am using specific dental software that is picky on its op. system. Also I probably don't know enough about this stuff to get this technical. Mike
I'm setting up my wife's dental office, and installing Cat5 to all the rooms for a peer-to-peer network. I'll be connected to cable for the network. What would I have to do to have a WLAN available to the waiting room patients, like an "internet cafe"? Obviously the wireless can't have access to...
Well, you could build the same size box with 2-4" vents, about 18" long and obtain nearly the same response. One PR wouldn't work well, so it should either be 2 PRs, or vents. As for closed, well in 100L box, which is noticeably smaller, you would get 3dB less output at 40, 5dB less at 30Hz, and...
Hi Serge, ambitious project. I built 2 using 12" lambda and 15" PRs, and love them. I used 3/4" baltic birch laminated with 3/4" MDF for sides, top and back. I inserted 3/4" redwood strips in all the corners; they look sharp. No rattles; I had to put some rubber feet on as they will walk around...
A couple things: first when you hear the snapping sound during loud bass passages, its likely the voice coil of the sub smashing into the backplate. Not a good sound; your sub will be damaged if that happens often enough. Don't pay any attention to the numbers except as a reference, as someone...
You might want to take a look at these. http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=WHP160-R RCA wireless from computer geeks, only $25. I'm going to get a set myself, probably not up to my Sennheisers but may be fun to play with. Mike
We lost one of the greats when Dirk died a few years ago. The initial reaction was mixed, to say the least. In his autobiography, Bogarde recounts the story, told him by Visconti, of the first screening of Death in Venice for "the American Money," i.e., a room full of studio executives...
Something is fishy, Wes. Icon shows a list of $1999 just for the monitor, which seems quite high? Can you elaborate a little on the prices? Thanks, Mike
Here are some results from someone who built these, and has measurement software: http://www.gti.net/wallin/audio/he_crate/he_crate.html Although the response is somewhat ragged, I've talked to him about the speakers, and he likes them in general. Says imaging is impressive, along with...
I just got off the phone with Dell support. The machine doesn't have an AGP slot, but there is a built in ATI Rage video. The tech said sound isn't guaranteed to work, also the pci slots are 3.3V. Its cheap, but a lot of work to make it be a good PC, I think. Mike
To those looking for a good spy movie, check out the 1965 (?) release of "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold". Richard Burton received a well-deserved Oscar nomination; he was robbed in a lot of folks estimation. Back in the days when a movie relied on plot development and character to be...
Sorry I didn't get back to you, Jeff. Your setup looks great; what a difference to remove the glare screen. Have you had the ISF cal. yet? I thought that price was quite exceptional; how does it do on normal NTSC programming? Any problems yet? Thanks, Mike
Costco has these in my area for $2795. Is this a good price, and are there any disadvantages to this set? Can't really compare it with any others.......... Mike
I have a lot of widescreen LDs. I'm in the process of buying a new HD tv, something in the range of ~$5K. How does a non-anamorphic LB picture work on either a 4:3, or 16:9 RPTV? Will a 16:9 tv zoom to use the full screen? (Depending on OAR?) So many damn acronyms, like learning a new language...
Very sagely put, Michael. Does it seem most of the new technology is going toward WS? While at CC buying my RP91 I was talking to the sales guy about TVs; he mentioned he had a no-box Diamond Mitsu 65-something or other cheap. But looking at it, switching to a local cable station that I watch...
Yep, thats what I thought. They have download manuals for everything, incl. RP56. But not for the '91. I ended up buying it for $18 w/tax, shipping. Mike
Well, thanks for all the input. Now I'm thoroughly confused; it looks like I need to find the set I like with the compromises I can live with. I was in Fry's, and looking at 4:3s when I saw the Grand Wega. Wow. It was playing right next to a couple other LCDs and a plasma; the Sony was the best...
Way back, Pitch Black was mentioned as having both DD ES and DTS ES. My widescreen, unrated version seems to have neither; it doesn't come up on the language screen, nor does my 950 think so. Were there more than one release of this?
Mike
Assuming equal quality sets, and that the 4:3 has enhanced (squeeze) features, what disadvantages are there to the 4:3 set? We do a significant amount of TV watching, so there won't be burn in on the 16:9. The bars while watching a WS movie don't seem to bother us. Everytime I go into BB or CC...
Racio, music and movie tracts have very different contents. While your fronts may handle music well down to 50, various explosions etc. will raise problems. This is a problem with a fixed bass management system; one reason I bought a 950 was for the bass features. Personally I think its always...
Thanks, Steve. Is conversion from 480 to 540 a bad thing? What sources output in 540, 720, and 1080? If any of those are only games, I don't need to worry about them. Sorry for the questions, just a little unclear as to why there are so many formats. Mike
I've enjoyed lurking and learning about most of this. Its time to buy a new RPTV, and it seems a good 4:3 with squeeze is going to be the best. My wife watches a lot of network TV, we never will use this tv for games. I'm just a little unsure as to the various formats, I see a lot of talk about...

GoodGuys has the 5700 in stock for $300, the RP91 IN STOCK for $600. Is the Panasonic worth twice the Tosh? The salesman said when they were gone they wouldn't get any more for awhile. Anybody?
