"Screwball Comedy" set would make Theodora Goes Wild fair game, yes?

movies to ask Warner for in chat?

Magnificent Ambersons, highest priority I can think of. At some point you have to cut bait and go with the materials you have, this is too important to languish. A deal to include Criterion's commentary by Carringer from their old laser would be nice, it's also too useful/important to just...

Bad Movies We Love 1960s to present

Who said it was a disaster? It's not a disaster, it's just very very funny. Pacino is a one-man over the top machine - just listen to him bite off "Gimme All You Got! Gimme All You Got!" or "You could get keeeeled walkin' your doggie!'. The guy has me rolling on the floor. Really, drinking games...

Bad Movies We Love 1960s to present

The trick of the "Bad Movies We Love" book is to not focus on the obvious, like Ed Wood or genre schlock, but rather movies that most often had some fairly significant people involved who thought they were making a something of quality that time has revealed to be silly or just a flat-out...

Statement concerning THE LAST EMPEROR (Criterion Collection)

You mean "accept" it? If so, spoken like a true Dalek. If you mean "except", that's far too accomodating and not Dalek-y at all. Personally I picked up a used copy of the Optimum quite cheaply this past week and couldn't be happier. Looks great. So I guess I didn't accept it, or except it.

C'mon Universal....THE SEVEN PER CENT SOLUTION

As a fan of both, I'd say they have virtually nothing meaningful in common. An interest in deconstruction perhaps, but they go after deconstructing different things in tonally wholly different ways. They're both original Sherlock Holmes stories from the same decade interested more in why he...

It's been so slow with classic movie news!!

Sure we did. The Kubrick set, the Leading Ladies Collection 2 set. Even one for December - the Blade Runner releases. I promise you Warners considers Blade Runner a Classic (actually, you should go to the Warners DVD website sometime and look at their "Classics" page - there's an old Halle Berry...

Kenneth Branagh's HAMLET -- the ultimate, merged, when-oh-when thread

I feel like there should be some sort of commemorative service or something. Maybe the thread should be locked now, sort of like retiring a player's number. The only thing left to do is to campaign to have Robert's name added to the DVD's credits.

The Sopranos Season 6, Part II - April 2007

It's been commonly called the Soprano family for a few years now, starting sometime after Richie Aprile's death, but historically (in the show's backstory), it's the DiMeo Family, after founder Eckley "The Old Man" DiMeo. Johnny Boy and Junior Soprano were his capos. DiMeo has been in prison for...

    Lost season 3 discussion....

I enjoyed this one more than most this season, but naturally what sticks out is the negative. I thought the our Sawyer/CooperSawyer confrontation was rather slackly written. The way our Sawyer discovers the relationship of CooperSawyer to him felt very contrived and unnatural. Cooper uses the...

    MoviesUnlimited news update for April....

Except Fox is now handling release of MGM stuff, so that's probably correct. Whether or not they're correct that "The Boy Friend" is actually being prepped - well, who knows?

With demise of places like Tower Records where are collectors buying their dvd's?

By the way, any of us interested in bargain hunting on DVDs should be interested in the arguments beginning today in the Supreme Court, as the case of whether or not to overturn the 1911 Dr. Miles price-fixing ruling kicks off. This is the ruling that allows for the concept of retail sales below...

With demise of places like Tower Records where are collectors buying their dvd's?

Not brick and mortars, that's for sure. Online retail or columbiahouse accounts for at least 90% of my purchases, even including the early days of the format. Once in awhile I buy used from physical stores, once in awhile a well-priced set at Costco. The occasional advertised door buster/loss...

James Bond Ultimate Editions DEFECT LIST - Glitch Reports Only, Please!

Many of these players aren't region-free, per se, they're region-settable. I find that setting mine to Region 1 only doesn't change the result. It may be related, however.

How Accurate is IMDb for film ranking?

Surely Gojira/Godzilla for 1954. I would be tempted to go both Quatermass Xperiment for '55 and Quatermass 2 for '57. I'm a fan of Four Sided Triangle ('53) but virtually no one else is and wouldn't expect you to dislodge War of the Worlds for it. Ikarie XB 1 ('63) La Jetee ('62)

How Accurate is IMDb for film ranking?

What criteria have you used so far? Is it all from IMDB? You're trying to use user ratings to establish this?

    Cases and covers are worthless?

I've been throwing my cases routinely for two or three years now. Discs go in binders. I do save the art, it gets tossed in a dedicated box.

Universal Cinema Classics: The Heiress, etc. on 02-06-07

Lots of people have declined to do DVD commentaries for work they are proud of, for quite a number of reasons. You think it unlikely she would refuse, I think it likely. We're both speculating fruitlessly.

Scarface (1932): Shame of an Industry

My memory of the early days of AMC was being struck by the impression that their programming consisted entirely of alternating "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" with "Mary of Scotland", over and over again.

Where are the St. Trinian's films!?

Charles - you have the R2 set? That's a pretty recent release, yes? What's the quality like on "Belles"? I bought an R4 Australian release of it a couple years ago, but it looks like it came from a pretty ragged source. If the R2 looks good, I might be up for an upgrade.

Yeah this alone could be HD-DVD's ticket to a life expectancy. Not smart.
