Having the stereo cord connected to your DVD is not a problem. You can have the analog (l/r output) and the digital cable plugged in at the same time with no ill effect. The important thing is to have your DVD player setup correct and your receiver setup correct. On my Denon receiver...

The test tones apply to any 5.1 channel material including DVD. As many have said its best to calibrate using a Radio Shack SPL meter.

When I was in BB this weekend I could only find (4) copies of the widescreen version and they were not part of the "main" display. You really had to look for them.
