I don't know what you consider cheap but for $15-20 you can buy them at Best Buy and similar stores. It's fun to do DIY projects but for $15 you may want to avoid an hour or two of work and just buy them :)
Also another question - are 'toppers' for the 5/8" allthread readily available? I'd love to end up with a more finished look like this:
I know that generally means having that rounded top piece part of the threaded rod, but perhaps it's also a piece you can find to add onto the all-thread...
The Infinity Entra Center is out - I went to look at it and the cloth grill isn't black, it's PURPLE... kind of clashes with my room :)
I actually owned the Acoustic Research Phantom setup about a year ago and liked it a lot. The 252C is high on my list right now.
Other choices I've seen are...
If you have a projector, you'll want a progressive-scan DVD player. S-Video ain't the best anymore!
Either get a progressive DVD player with component output and buy a converter, or just get a DVD player with VGA outs. The difference is very noticeable.
I've read every Flexy post here (just do a search for FLEX and read on! Tons about painting).
For MDF:
Be sure to seal any cut edges or they'll soak up endless paint and never get the same gloss or finish as the rest of the piece.
As this is for a simple living room HT and not our future basement all-out-awesome HT, I actually looked into the Bose VCS-10 but couldn't bring myself to even consider it after reading 20 negative and 0 positive reviews. :)
1) Have any of you terminated the bottom or tops of the threads into a recess in a shelf? Like for the bottom - have the bottom be a shelf with the threads above it sitting in a 3/4" deep recess (assuming a 1" piece of wood or MDF)?
My rack will be half on tile and half on carpet, and my...
Your point is very persuasive (love the visual of my TV falling over... :))
I'm going to give this more thought and more design work. Perhaps I can design a setup where the shelves are supported at 6 points.
It's for a TV rack and thus I don't want anything in the middle front. I'm putting the edge of the bottom of the TV flush with the front for the best aesthetics.
I'm thinking it may be best to use 1" MDF (or double up two 3/4" sheets) for the top shelf. I want it sturdy, but 100# ain't THAT...
Perhaps we're talking about different materials. There's plywood, MDF, chipboard, pressboard, etc. If we're talking about painted surfaces, how can we be certain it was MDF? I know that the unit I mentioned is MDF only because when I bought it, the box was damaged and a shelf was broken in...
Well... it seems the best idea might just be to be "boring" (hehe, this is still a fun project) and use MDF painted a similar silvery grey as the TV plastic.
Would a piece of 3/4" or 1" MDF in this configuration be okay?
That puts supports along the back at about 13" intervals, and 16"...
My problem with this is that I've had this TV stand for 4 years:

With a 32" TV (about 120 lbs) on this stand, made of either...
Wouldn't Aluminum flex more than acrylic/lexan? It's a fairly soft metal, isn't it?
It does sound like a great look though... but I may have my heart set on the clear acyrlic... Maybe if I did FOUR supports across the back (so every 10 inches) and then three in front (every 20 inches). Do...
That's exactly what I may do! I figured I'd have whatever shop I bought the stuff at do the ripping/cutting, and I'd use a roundover bit in a router to finish it off.
Do you think 1/2" Lexan, with supports every 20", can support 100 lbs?
Your local satellite dealer (and I don't mean Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, etc - go to a satellite dealer) has lots of mounting options including stands, poles, etc.
GET A REPLAYTV!
They go for $200-300 on EBAY and have no subscription fees. I'm one of the many who owned both Tivo and ReplayTV and chose ReplayTV for a lot of reasons...
Check out the ReplayTV forum at AVS Forum
I'm under the assumption that the fewer devices the signal travels through, the better :)
I've changed my requirements... let's hope there are at least a few models I can choose from?
Here are my requirements:
• 40-55"
•VGA input
•Under $2,500 (cheaper the better :))
Thanks! Do any TV's fit these requirements?

Don't flame me, but in this case looks are more important than sound. Eventually I'll build my dedicated HT with Maggies or something :) But for now this room is pretty small, (12x15) and must be HIP !
I'm totally torn now. I'm considering blueroom minipods, Piega S4's, Acoustic Reality's...
