Windtalkers: Director's Edition..... 3-Disc Set....20 Min. Extended Cut..... May 20th

Thanks for the input, both Josh and you too Bill. :emoji_thumbsup: While Josh's comments make me want to get the dvd all the more, Bill's cautions me not to try and convince Windtalkah-hataz to give the new dvd a chance. ;)

Windtalkers: Director's Edition..... 3-Disc Set....20 Min. Extended Cut..... May 20th

Coolness Ed! :emoji_thumbsup: :D Joshua, when you get the time, would you please come back and post whether you felt the additional minutes added much in character or story development, or if it was just more action filler? I'll probably still pick the set up regardless, as I don't have the...

Windtalkers: Director's Edition..... 3-Disc Set....20 Min. Extended Cut..... May 20th

Um, that's kinda what I said Ed - did I not come across? I may have left out the "It's all about the Nic" bit, but I figured that would be understood, being that the critique is that people were upset that the movie wasn't "an in depth sociological study of the code talkers", meaning that it...

    Roman-era films on DVD?

Dave, yep, that's the story. I first heard of it from Frank Miller's comic book, "300". I believe, but I could be mistaken, that the battle was also referenced in Nikos Kazantzakis' book, "Freedom or Death" which I read a few years back. Alan, I realized the difference, I just figured a movie...

Article regarding 70's movie era - discussion

Jim, you're welcome! I would agree that creativity doesn't have to be compromised, but I do think it's easier today to give in too quickly to a "decent job" and not go for the gold. I think the standard has been lowered. Granted, films like Jackson's LOTR series, Requiem for a Dream...

The digital bits has cover art for this... :) But, alas, no street date. :frowning:

    What vampire/Dracula film is this?

Vampyres has a scene like that. It's out from Anchor Bay. It's gothic, but modern/70s.

    DVD Storage Problem

EDIT;Oops. Sorry Michael, I guess I should have read your post first before replying. I don't think my "solution" below will help you at all, heh. I'd need three of those Megachangers... then I'd be set! :D I can't stand the idea of paying too much money for too little capacity, which...

Hmmm, that bit about montage being the tool and symbolism being but one possible goal has me thinkin' Mike. I think that's helping me out of the box a bit. Daniel, it looks like the book is still in print. I had only looked at Amazon, where they only had a few copies offerred by individuals...

Windtalkers: Director's Edition..... 3-Disc Set....20 Min. Extended Cut..... May 20th

Oops, I meant to say that Apes was a critical failure, not box office failure. :b The same can be said of critical failures Armegeddon, Pearl Harbor, etc., that got great treatment on dvd.

Thanks Daniel! I'll keep my eye out for it. It looks like it may be out of print, but there're a bunch of used book stores around here - I'll put that on my hunt list. :D

I don't know Daniel. Your explanation of the montage effect of the Untouchables scene just seems to me to be symbolism. A new baby being brought into a life of violence? You have to logically stretch to come to that conclusion. It's more from exercising abstract thought than from visual cues...

Windtalkers: Director's Edition..... 3-Disc Set....20 Min. Extended Cut..... May 20th

I'm not sure how much it actually took at the box office, but everybody seemed to loathe From Hell when it came out... then it got an impressive SE on dvd. Planet of the Apes was dreadful, still is, and look at the SE it got. I'm sure there are others, but my mind is blank now.

But what's the difference between montage and just cuting back and forth from shot to shot? I can see your point with the opening of Nevsky, as it reveals what's happening in a series of shots without putting up a title saying "this is a corronation" - but my problem comes with The Untouchables...

New Seven Samurai and more Kurosawa from Criterion?

Guys, I wouldn't go by any dates listed by retailers, or even at Image. I'd be seriously, extremely surprised if Silence of the Lambs or Spinal Tap was out when I got Seven Samurai. I remember seeing Amarcord, 400 Blows, and The Lady Vanishes... Silence and Tap simply were not there. Why would...

That makes some sense of the space now Daniel, thanks. I'm no student of Russian film, or Russian anything for that matter, nor do I know anything about montage (I believe it has something to do with symbolism, but I have no clue as to what makes it different than being just symbolism), so I...

You know Lew, Henry V has just been one of those elusive Critters for me. There are so many Criterions that I want, it's unreal. Add to that the steady release of other dvds as well, and, well, I don't know when I'll be able to finagle it. :frowning: Being that I've got on this WWII propaganda...

Hey now! ;) I never made any bold statement about one of the greatest action scenes ever filmed. I wasn't talking about any one scene, but the whole film overall. I do remember being impressed by the frozen lake battle, but I just didn't think the film as a whole was a visual, compositional...

Windtalkers: Director's Edition..... 3-Disc Set....20 Min. Extended Cut..... May 20th

Personally, I think most of the disdain for this film stems from a subconscious resentment that it's an action flick rather than an in depth sociological study of the code talkers. People don't come right out and say that, but that's about the only way I can explain the outright open hostility...

New Seven Samurai and more Kurosawa from Criterion?

Same here Matthew. I was window shopping at Best Buy for a player, not really intending to buy one that day, and on my way out, saw Seven Samurai on the shelf. I immediately picked it up, marched right back to the DVD players, and picked up a shiny new Panasonic A110. :) At the time, there...

I didn't like Alexander Nevsky too much. The whole film seemed mis framed, as he mostly filmed all of the action at eye level on a flat plane, above the ground (cutting off characters feet, very bad composition, allowing objects to run out of the frame) and filming lots of clear sky. There is so...

Kurosawa & Mifune retrospective... now in Dallas!

Definitely go Chris! I agree with Lew that some of the impact of I Live in Fear may be lost to history, but I think it was still incredibly well done. And Seven Samurai on the big screen... :emoji_thumbsup: :emoji_thumbsup: How about that last frame of Drunken Angel? Wow!

Kurosawa & Mifune retrospective... now in Dallas!

Thanks Claire! They applauded here too after Seven Samurai, and it was a full house. I went early to the two others, and there weren't but maybe ten people at either show, so there wasn't much applause then. It was terrific seeing these. I'd never seen Drunken Angel or I Live In Fear before, so...
