I'll be starting my sonotube project this week after spending a couple of monthe doing research. I'm wondering if the 10" port is the problem. There is a rule of thumb that states that the port volume shouldn't exceed a certian level of the volume of the driver ... or something like that...

You'll want to look at speakers that have the Theil(?)Small
specs. These numbers allow you to load a driver into a modeling program such as noted above and see it performs in a given enclosure.

Just a wild ass guess. Your plugs and sockets are polarized? If not, have you tried turning the plug over? Is the hum a 60 cycle hum? Have you tried to run a ground to say your cold water inlet? Do you have any dimmers in the room? They can induce hum. If the noise is at sixty cycles...
I know that there are project boxes available in various sizes at electronics stores. They come on various sizes etc., some with punch outs for knobs and stuff. You'd probably have to paint but that's where I'd be looking.
