I read a review that said a big negative for this display is that it displays 1080p at 30fps rather than 60fps. Does this mean that it drops a 1080i signal to 540i, and then scales it to 1080p? If so, is this noticeable? Or does it just mean that you get judder on moving objects?
It is a design flaw in your TV that it "locks" in full mode when fed an HDTV or progressive signal. Many older HDTV sets were erroneously built this way. Pioneer stuck with the design flaw longer than most other manufacturers...and I'm still not sure whether they eventually stopped it with their...
You might try getting a calibration DVD disc (AVIA or I believe a new cheaper Video Essentials disc was just released) and using it to calibrate your TV set before making any further judgements. Alternatively, you could use one of the later THX optimode features, but you'll get better results...
I wouldn't say Beta totally failed - it's very popular in the professional a/v industry. Now Sony gets away with charging double the price for Beta Tapes and astronomical prices for Beta recorders to the professionals.
Chris, as owner of both the 1600 and 2800, the answer to your question is absolutely not. The 2800 has one of the worst chroma upsampling errors I've seen - even visible on interlaced output. The 1600 not only doesn't have it, it also has a much better video signal overall, resulting in a...
It doesn't make a difference. It means that the DVD player samples the video on the DVD 2 times before creating an analog signal. 27mhz is the bandwidth required to sample an interlaced signal 2 times. Since progressive is double the bandwidth of an interlaced signal, 54mhz is required to...
What's an A-50? You mean the DirectTV Satallite receiver?
My guess is that the 16x9 mode works just as it does in a DVD player. If a sourced is broadcasted in anamorphic 16:9, then the receiver wouldn't downconvert it letterbox.
Though, I don't think anything is broadcasted in anamorphic...
AbelM,
You should use either 4:3 Letterbox or 4:3 Normal (Pan & Scan), depending on which you prefer.
If you use 4:3 Letterbox, you will always get Letterboxed output from the DVD player. If you use 4:3 Normal, you will get Letterboxed if the disc only contains a widescreen version of the...
If the player can read CDR's/CDRWs, then it's possible to upgrade it's firmware via a CD disc. If there is a firmware update available from Toshiba for the player, you'd probably have to get it from them.
Ya know, I just noticed you're in Hoboken, NJ. Hello there neighbor.:)
Actually, many DVD players do not have DTS output turned on by default. It must be manually turned on in the setup menu. However, based on your previous response, it sounds like you already checked this.
Another thing...
You might want to check out the Panasonic RP56. It has the Faroudja FLI2200 chipset, very comparable to the Si503. Can be had for around $230 and is the only player in your price range with one of the superior chipsets.

You might want to also try contacting Disney. I bet the problems has more to do with the disc than the Xbox. Disney is notorious for their DVDs giving problems in many players, and they know it too. This was a popular issue with Dinosaur when it was first released.
Andrew,
It's interesting to read your post. I just finally got to see this player in action (at my local dealer showroom, that is) yesterday. I have to say, the progressive-scan picture quality is excellent. But I too felt the same way otherwise about the player. I'm not sure I'd spend...
Hey Fellow HTaddicts, I need urgent help...
Is $580 a good price for a pair of Paradigm Montior 7's? I was able to get a local dealer to take off $70 from $650 if I purchase a center channel as well (the Paradigm center channel goes for $199, but I don't remember the model number).
Thanks
DB:)
I believe movie theater film has 1200 lines or resolution, progressively framed.
DB:)
I think I should have said it could have up to about 1200 lines. But I think it can vary, depending on the film camera used to shoot the movie.
I agree with Tyler. From my experience, I've usually discovered large mass manufacturers don't make the best speakers.
In addition, unless you absolutely have to have everything by Pioneer, I would highly recommend looking at the Panasonic RP91K, Denon DVM4800, or Kenwood Sovereigns before...
