*** Official 'Fellowship of the Ring' DVD member review & discussion thread

Hi Did a little more experimentation with my disc with regard to the lack of dynamic range I'm experiencing. Chapter 2. Frodo meets Gandalf and they're having a chat :) At 20dB below reference the dialogue is running along averaging 75dB. So at reference it would be averaging 95dB. The...

Iain yeah, the quiet bits were loud and the loud bits were a bit louder. Rob, that sounds like a different disc. Mine is excessive, not 3-4dB louder, more like 10dB. My disc is the R1 Canadian, with the French track. What have you guys got? Surely they can't be a difference between...

*** Official 'Fellowship of the Ring' DVD member review & discussion thread

Hi Watched the DVD (R1 Canadian version) last night. Loved it. The audio track is confusing me a bit though. It's mastered soooo loud. I usually watch at 5-8dB below reference. I had to watch this at 18dB below reference. At 15dB under ref my Shiva sub bottomed. Hhmmm. I have my system...

LFE vs Diverted Bass - Is your processor WRONG? (Updated with custom test tones)

Hi. Thank you Vince, it's very handy to know your own gear's working correctly. Here's my systems results. (Calibrated using Avia, reference level 00dB on master volume, Denon 3801 all speakers set to small). At 5dB under reference I measure- 80dB 80dB 80dB 79dB 79dB 91dB...

LFE vs Diverted Bass - Is your processor WRONG? (Updated with custom test tones)

Hi This is the thread. Pete Mazz posts- --- Great information! Now the burning question. Are the low bass test signals on Avia compensated in any way for use with the Radio Shack SPL meter, as it is known to read on the low side for lower frequency signals? --- Guy Kuo replies- --- No...

LFE vs Diverted Bass - Is your processor WRONG? (Updated with custom test tones)

Hi. I'm 99% sure I once read a post somewhere by Guy Kuo stating that the LFE level was 10 down in the 6 channel pan. I apologise if I'm mistaken. Cheers Boris

    subwoofer calibration

No problem Eric. I've always wondered if all 3801s are like this. If so I bet there are some way off LFE calibrations out there. So 10dB over + maybe a personal 3-5dB boost, wow. Can't sound good. Yeah, stick with Avia or VE. Cheers Boris

    subwoofer calibration

Hi. Confirmed last night. My Denon 3801s LFE tone is 10dB down. My LFE control pad is in the correct position (0dB, highest). So if I used my receivers internal test tones to calibrate, my LFE would be at least 10dB hot. I'll stick with Avia :) Hope this sheds some light on your discrepancy...

    subwoofer calibration

Hi. I too have a Denon 3801. My system is calibrated using Avia, all speakers set to small, LFE toggle/pad in it's highest position (0dB), 85dB measured all round. I never even bothered with the receivers internal test tones. One day while tweaking I thought I'd give them a try, just to...

Need help choosing DIY kit for centre & fronts.

Thanks for the replies everyone. :) Jon, no I haven't heard any of these systems so I would be buying these blind/deaf with my fingers crossed:frowning:. I've spoke to a guy via email who's using the IPL centre and he says it's great, but that doesn't really account for anything. Well you've...

Need help choosing DIY kit for centre & fronts.

Hi I'd like to upgrade my commercial speakers with DIY efforts. I'll be starting with the centre, then the fronts and then eventually the surrounds. I'd like some advise please regarding which kit to go for. I've limited DIY knowledge and skills so it has to be a full kit (the only project...

    How bad is my Subwoofer

Hi Richard. The Servo 15 is Paradigms reference model, top of the line. I believe you'd have to spend quite a bit more than £500 to get an equivalent performing REL. As always- audition. Cheers Boris

    How bad is my Subwoofer

James, the top REL subs are pretty pricey here too. However the Studio II has been reduced from £4000 to £2500 as the Studio III is replacing it. The cheapest REL is around £400 (the Q50) Richard, Richer Sounds stock Paradigm products at excellent prices. There's a branch in Brighton. You...

Need advice on first DIY sub project (possibly isobarik)

Hi Dustin I used a black gloss auto spray to finish it. Maybe a bad idea as I went through loads of cans. Well, you live and learn. I lined the enclosure. The white paper talked about using Polyfill which is a stuffing thing. Many DIY sites advised lining a ported alignment usually gives...

Need advice on first DIY sub project (possibly isobarik)

Dustin B, I also made the Shiva 142.5 litre EBS enclosure. I made mine front firing. I just sat it on it's side with the driver firing over the port. No legs used. I'm very pleased. Here's a couple of very poor pictures- http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/boz001uk?...src=ph&start=1 Cheers

    Sealed Tempest results.....

Hi, I've been long time lurker, short time member. It's excellent threads like these that gave me the insight, addiction and thirst for knowledge regarding DIY subs. I'm a proud owner of a DIY Shiva. Probably quite rare here in the UK. Great work Terry. Cheers Boris
