This was changed in 2015, and has been discussed extensively in the other threads.
It's an entirely different take. The "privy" line was a censorship to get a G rating, and I found in the lined script that one alternate take was done with the original line from Broadway, "pisser". We screened...
There are things you learn that you can only find by putting different versions into the editing software. Already have found a couple small things I didn’t know. It’s a small puzzle working out the differences in the sync and use of the score in the main titles between the Pioneer and the...
I'm working on a big visual essay that will detail all the changes through all the versions released for home viewing. Hopefully should put a lot of questions to rest.
Yeah that’s the same terrible photoshop cover done for the original DVD 20 years ago. The original poster art on the slipcover isn’t great either but it’s surely better.
Ron, Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for this wonderful place. It's amazing to think I've been here over 20 years now! Only thing I'd say is you should have founded the site one day later ;)
Thanks for the review, it stood out to me how you described seeing the detail in the costumes and it reminded me of when Peter Hunt and I were in the color bay at Sony with the masterful Sherri Eisenberg and Grover Crisp who did heroic work recovering this film from the negatives.
This is a...
All I know is that when the 4K HDR version was color graded, when it was just a theatrical release project, I was sitting next to Peter Hunt as we went over the whole thing and it was all approved and looked correct. I'll be getting the disc tomorrow and I'll report back if I see anything that...
I'm thinking I may do a project.
My copy of the disc is coming tomorrow, and it spurred me on to remember some of the research I've done over the years. One big piece of it was a large article I wrote for the long defunct website DVD Angle, which came out 20 years ago exactly this month.
I...
It's a good observation, and the answer is that it's part of the "design" of the film in terms of how the lighting evolves. The sequences in the set for the Congress were by and large shot in script order, and Peter designed them in such a way that they went from flat/bland/sitcom type basic...
What excellent news!!! Now there is a “perfect” version to watch.
When the Blu came out they were scared of people not wanting changes so they put pisser on the shorter cut and privy on the extended cut. Pisser is what it SHOULD be, so hence there was no ideal way to view except to start the...
Not true, Peter very much wanted Betty in the film. There were certain reasons why a few people didn’t make the jump from the stage cast, and essentially they kept a few more out so the ones they actually blackballed didn’t appear so obviously excluded.
I’m sorry to be vague but some stories...
When the home video versions were done pre 1991, the final mix only existed in mono, so a simulation was done for video. Materials existed to MIX for stereo but this wasn’t done until later releases.
There is no need for this. The film was properly mixed in 5.1 and supervised by the director. This mix is used for all releases from the DVD forward. The theatrical and LD cuts will have their appropriate mono and 2.0 stereo mixes.
There is no “original stereo” the theatrical release was in mono, fake stereo for early home video as mentioned, true stereo mixed for the LD and then 5.1 overseen by Hunt for the DVD and later releases.
Stereo was big in the 50s but it dropped off massively in use until Dolby came along in the late 70’s/early 80’s. Warner didn’t want to spend the money to mix stereo for a few theaters.
Yeah I agree Josh, I’ve seen the film hundreds of times but I’ve never seen this cut in widescreen. Also there are a few shots that are exclusive to this version, places where PHH went to closeups for his cut, like just before Martha comes down the stairs.
The real pleasure of the shorter cut...
Do you mean the main titles? The overture is only in the LD. Fun bit of trivia if you watch the LD cut you’ll see there are outtakes of going down the stairs that are the edited out head and tail of the shots because the only version they had of the correct shot had titles on. The sound of his...
Now we just need to work to get the Director's Cut of Texasville you produced released again as well! Hopefully the digression will be allowed - I found when comparing the two versions that some alternate takes were used for your LD version - Do you recall if those shots were used to avoid the...
No Jack, it was removed for the 2002 DVD, the original Director's Cut, along with the music under Ben being painted. The Ben music was restored for the Revised Directors cut on BD and 4K
To be clear the music created/added for the LD is the instrumental "roadshow" music elements of the...
