How bad and how frequent is the flicker bug on the RP56?

Look at the toybox lid in Toy Story in the scene in which Woody is making a speech. In certain of the shots, the lid will pulse. Personally, I rate this as a very minor problem.

    Just bought a Toshiba 50HX81 ... a few questions.

Check other threads both here and at the Home Theater Spot. But: Immediately turn the picture mode (see page 42 of the manual) to "movie" and turn contrast down from 50 to more like 30. Setting the contrast to something like 30 will help lengthen the life of the set. Moreover, the set...

Will an SVS 16-46PCi be okay in.....

Of "low and flat" the low part won't be a problem but the flat will be. You may have resonance problems. So you should equalize.

I would really like your experienced advice

I don't have first hand experience but from what I've read: A used CRTs sounds like a bad idea. The hot DLP projector on the market is the Sharpvision 9000. It was the first to use TI's 16:9 HD DLP chip. I expect/hope that prices on these machines, and perhaps on comparable HD LCOS...

You should also post questions about projectors and screens at AVS, which tends to be more projector oriented than this forum -- they even have a separate section for screens http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forum...?s=&forumid=23

Glass tube hdtv vs. projection hdtv's. Is their a quality difference?

The Toshiba is probably the 43H71, which is an RPTV. The Toshiba is a good set. You can check out the angle of vision issue for yourself in the store. But in terms of basic video quality, the Toshiba is a very good set, and it is much bigger, obviously, than the Sony. Unless you will be...

Glass tube hdtv vs. projection hdtv's. Is their a quality difference?

Like Todd B, still not sure of your question. You write "there is a huge difference in picture quality with direct view tv's vs. big screen tv's" The phrase "big screen tv's" usually refers to RPTVs (or large CRT-based direct views or, less frequently, plasma) rather than front projectors...

    Video Essentials & Toshiba RPTV

The business about blooming is merely to establish an extreme upper bound for contrast. Here is what Guy Kuo, one of the writer of Avia, has to say http://www.keohi.com/keohihdtv/exper.../contrast.html

Wanted: Widescreen DVD that really emphasizes the surrounds on a 5.1 setup.

As others have already written, Saving Private Ryan is the one must have for sound. Not just the beach landing either, but also the final battle. It is the standard. That said, One of the very best surround effects, and apropos given the date, is the angel of death (killer of the first born)...

    Screen size and viewing distance???

Ultimately this is your call. For what it's worth, for DVD on an HD ready set, viewing distances on the order of 4-4.5x screen height are common. Many people, including me, sit closer, more like 3.3x screen height. Someone on this forum once claimed to watch a 100" projection screen from 7'...

should I get a progressive scan player at all?

Just getting a new DVD player may be a big improvement, they are evolving rapidly. And if you get a new DVD player, why not make it progressive? But given the timing -- it is already mid March and the new DVD models will start to appear in June and July or so -- you can afford to wait. As to...

    Pannasonic 47WX49 vs Mits 46809

I think Mits's "promise" is better than nothing but it may not be MUCH better than nothing unless Mits changes its promise to include DVI in addition to firewire. My reading of product announcements and current threads here, on AVS, and on the Spot, suggests that there is now a consensus that...

    Pannasonic 47WX49 vs Mits 46809

They are similar in terms of picture quality (excellent once adjusted but both push red). If you plan to use a progressive DVD player then the Panasonic has an ergonomic problem: it assumes that any progressive signal is anamorphic. So you will need to use a player with its own aspect ratio...

    The 47" Panasonic and "A Bug's Life" - HELP!!

Or even better, try Shrek. Bugs Life, which I love, is a particularly unfortunate choice because only the collectors edition, which is relatively expensive, is anamorphic. So it is almost certain that you were watching the non-anamorphic version of Bug's Life. The problem is that the Pan 47...

Horizontal Lines of Resolution - Help!

On horizontal resolution: With these sets, you cannot show an HDTV signal, so the best that you can do is display the full resolution of DVD. DVDs have a maximum horizontal resolution of 540. That number is somewhat confusing. Horizontal resolution is usually stated as the number of...

You'll find lots of threads on this and things haven't changed too much in the last few weeks. Many of the following are in the bad but fun camp. All are very good or excellent transfers. Standard current show pieces: Fast and the Furious, Jurassic Park III, Planet of the Apes (remake)...

Consumer Reports Does Big Screen TVs

Having finally received my issue of the current CU in the mail, I thought that they did a good job on the RPTVs, and I have been critical of them in the past. I don't have any quarrel with their rankings or their basic methodology. It was a judgment call on their part and their position is...

    Pioneer 440 or Panasonic RP56?

Unless you expect to use progressive scan soon, like within six months, you should save $50 dollars or so and buy a Panasonic 31 instead of the 56. They are identical (I have both) save for progressive scan. By the time you buy a TV that can handle progressive, some of the quirks in the...

    More Questions regarding RP56

The lag in scene transition may be a layer change. (Most new DVDs have information encoded on two different layers that are glued together.) Layer changes on the 56 are slower than on some other players.

I need everyone's help choosing a DVD Player

Is it possible that with the Pioneer that the black lines you see are simply scan lines? If progressive is irrelevant I would take the Panasonic 31 over the 56; it's almost identical save for lack of progressive. Frankly, any of these models will be fine. The main advantage of the...
