    Twilight Zone Definitive Edition

The last few posts I feel need reponding to. First of all, the distortion you hear is not a result of anything introduced in the digital domain. The distortion is clearly evident in the analog master. In this case, "Mirror Image", the original 35mm fullcoat 3-track master was utilised. Despite...

    The Cardinal

I had a careful listen to all four sides of the laserdisc and I am convinced that the source this came from was a discrete three or four track stereo mix (mixed at Shepperton by Red Law). The 2/0 track was poorly mixed and encoded. Only side two of the disc can you really get any real indication...

    The Big Country

From my own experience post houses have dolby stereo optical heads and usually stick to the standard alignment. When they get an old mono track they will choose which side or channel (one or two) sounds the best. The optical track whether on a combined print or on it's own is usually threaded on...

HTF REVIEW: "Rambo Trilogy" (with screenshots)

I have only so far viewed part two and I am very disappointed with the audio. The DTS and DD 5.1 tracks sound like they are spreads from a two-track Lt/ Rt printmaster, as I can detect cancelled dialog in the surrounds. I am sure there were 70mm prints made on Rambo 2 on it's original release...

'The Devils' comes to R2 - what about R1?

Thanks for your quick reply. The 'Rape of Christ' sequence shows the nuns, now at the point of complete hysteria, disrobe and remove the statue of Christ on the cross and commit acts of indescribable indecency on it. As I recall there are inserts of Jesus' big toes and thumbs protruding like...

'The Devils' comes to R2 - what about R1?

Jon, do you know if this version of "The Devils" includes the complete "Rape of Christ" sequence, which was not in the BBC version. This sequence was included in the version submitted to the BBFC. I saw this uncut version back in '70/71 when I worked at Pinewood in the sound department. I have...

KHARTOUM is Dolby Surround not DD 5.1

Damin, in response to your enquiry about should two disrete channels (left and right) collapse to the center. The answer is that only the 'common' information in the two channels falls to the center position provided the balance is set correctly and you are sitting in a position directly in...

KHARTOUM is Dolby Surround not DD 5.1

Michael, you are correct, I should have made it 2/1, which I have just found out that there is a home video format of 2/1. But I have never heard of a 'theatrical' format or any title that I can recall that utilised 2/1.

KHARTOUM is Dolby Surround not DD 5.1

I have never heard of a two-channel format that has a separate sub channel. The professional decoder made by Dolby, model 562 clearly identifies 5.1 as 3/2L.

KHARTOUM is Dolby Surround not DD 5.1

I would like to set the record straight on a few things. First, below I have made a list of all the format abbreviations that I can presently think of and what they represent. 1) 1.0 or 1/0 Center Channel mono 2) 2.0 or 2/0 a) L/R Mono b) L/R Stereo c)...

KHARTOUM is Dolby Surround not DD 5.1

The only english audio track on the DVD that I bought last Saturday is a decoded Lt/Rt, which shows up on my decoder as four channels, not 'discrete' channels mind you but four channels derived from a two-channel matrixed track. My decoder makes it very clear by identifying, in this case, as...

KHARTOUM is Dolby Surround not DD 5.1

I am really disappointed. I picked up this title at Best Buy today, and noticed just before I paid for it that there was no mention of 5.1 just stereo surround, I prayed that it was just an oversight, but no. This is a title that I own on laserdisc and eagerly awaited it's release on DVD...

Harryhausen fans rejoice! THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER coming from Columbia in April

Frankly, I am not rejoicing. I purchased my copy yesterday and, while I am very happy with the color and the audio, I am disappointed with the fact that this 4x3 image is cropped on the sides, and no I do not have any overscan on my monitor. Sony somehow aggravate the problem by putting on a...
