The German version has both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 tracks. The small intro in the beginning is dubbed in German (about two minutes). Picture is anamorphic 2.35:1. There are no extras to speak of, only a couple of text features and crew credits.
No problems with the Ultimate DVD Platinum.
You can check your firmware version by
* power off your player
* press [TITLE], [CLEAR], [POWER]
* select 'Other Check'
I think Criterion provides an excellent way to venture outside the group of well-known classics, i.e. films that even a casual moviegoer recognises. King Kong, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, Casablanca and the Bridge on the River Kwai are all masterpieces but I'm sure there many obscure films...

Quite disappointing, really. BFI releases of Decameron and Canterbury Tales are non-anamorphic too. The upcoming Arabian Nights will probably be as well.
