    Kung Fu Battles Compilation??

"BEST OF THE MARTIAL ARTS FILMS" is a Region 0 disc that contains a lot of vintage footage from around the 80's, nearly all Hong Kong productions. You'll get a lot of Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, and Yuen Biao. The video footage itself is rather spotty, but you get a lot of bang for the buck and...

No, it's actually five pages about the color of a box. :)

Movies to have a colonoscopy by - let's have some fun!

A bit off topic, but in response to LewB, as a physician in training I know the stuff you're supposed to drink is a lovely concoction called "GoLytely," perhaps the most inappopriately-named pharaceutical in the world. Now, to make this on-topic, I will suggest "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

How do you organize your Movie rack?

Alphabetical by font type, followed by point size. Okay, just kidding. Alphabetical by title. How else would I be able to find what I was looking for? Amazingly enough, most of my friends while perusing my collection don't even realize it's alphabetical, even when they're searching for a...

More on Disney abandoning 2D Animation

Maybe this is an unfair comparison, but Miyazaki's Spirited Away only had a smattering of CGI, but beat out an all-CGI film for best Animated Picture last year.

What are some good MARTIAL ARTS flicks on DVD

A lot of these movies you will have to order Region 0 from an import site. hkflix.com is one such example, but there are many others out there as well. Enter the Dragon is a must viewing for any fans of the genre. Bruce Lee is still the master, even after all these years. No wires, no sped-up...

    Ikaruga -- old school greatness!

Just got Ikaruga for the GCN, and I have to say that this old-school-shooter-with-a-twist is simply sublime. The gameplay is tough as nails but never unfair, the graphics are unnecessarily beautiful, and the sound takes you right back to the best of classic shoot-em-up games. In short, the game...

    Kiki DVD out-of-sync...

Not to try to rouse anymore arguments, but there are some who thought the red tint on the R2 and R3 versions of Spirited Away was enough to severely distract (like me). Aaaaaanyways, so is the consensus right now that _only_ the broom-slap is off? Because that's the only thing that seems to...

    Kiki DVD out-of-sync...

Considering that Buena Vista Japan refused to budge on an all-red video transfer of Spirited Away, the biggest-grossing domestic movie in Japan ever, and that the faulty transfer lasted the entire film... I wouldn't hold my breath for a recall and fix on an admittedly minor issue.

HTF REVIEW: Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) (with screenshots)

On the subject of the Ghibli 3 (including Spirited Away)... Did anyone else find John Lasseter's intros to be a little on the over-the-top side? I guess the thing that really got to me (especially by the 3rd film) was the way he would say in a dramatic voice, "You are about to watch (insert...

    Miyazaki Set. Best Price?

The Best Buy deal seems to be the best, except for a subtle point non-fanboys would be sure to miss: As far as I can tell, anyone who would buy Kiki, Castle, and Spirited Away all at once most likely already owns Mononoke. And for that matter, Grave of the Fireflies, too. And perhaps even...

    Kiki DVD out-of-sync...

Sorry, but I've got to side with HowieG over here. I just popped in Kiki's and watched up to her midnight departure (one of my favorite parts of the film), and noticed what Howie pointed out. When Kiki raises her hand to slap her broom, the sound of the slap comes at the _peak_ of when she...

Miyazaki's SPIRITED AWAY, KIKI, and LAPUTA in April!

(sees Disney's box art for Laputa and Kiki's) Bleeeeaaahhh. Those look absolutely _awful_, second in ugliness only to Fox's My Neighbor Totoro cover. If it were up to me, the cover to Laputa would be nothing but blue sky and the floating island and World Tree prominently in the center. And the...

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams: original language issue?

Jeff, I know very well of your credentials, and I typically take your word as stated Truth, but I do have to ask how you can be so sure. I understand there's only a smattering of dialogue in the film anyway, so it would be pretty easy to grab someone from the studio and spend 10 minutes...

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams: original language issue?

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams comes out in March, and that makes me excited. I've never seen it, but have been told about it by multiple sources. IMDB gives the original language of the movie as Japanese (well, duh). However, DVDPlanet's specs for the film state that the disc will be English only...

Miyazaki's SPIRITED AWAY, KIKI, and LAPUTA in April!

I don't believe it. I can't believe it. I've latched on to so many false rumors, false hopes, I'm afraid of being disappointed again. I just will not believe that these wonderful movies are coming out to the US in uncut, pristine form. It is simply too good to be true, and when this rumor is...

HERO - any chance of this coming to the US intact?

Visiting my parents for the holidays in Taiwan. Went to Hong Kong for a couple of days, and saw numerous posters for a new flick called HERO. The cast reads like a "who's who" of Hong Kong cinema: Jet Li (self-explanatory), Donnie Yen (Iron Monkey, Once Upon a Time In China 2), Tony Leung (In...

*** Official "SPIRITED AWAY" Discussion Thread

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Not that it matters much to anyone here, but I have to say that I'm _not_ the founder of THEM, who's existence was in place long before I was around ASU. Anyways, I guess I didn't find the aforementioned scene revolting or shocking, but was just using it as an example. The...

Woo Jae: Yes, I'm _that_ Raphael. :b Or at least, I _was_. Ever since my graduation from ASU and starting back up in school here in Dallas I haven't done much reviewing. Thank you very much for the encouraging words, though. The site is still very much active back at T.H.E.M., and in very...

    Grave of Fireflies CE

Is this worth a blind purchase? BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT. This is a film that _everyone_ needs to watch at least once. Now that there is a good anamorphic transfer available in its original language there is absolutely no good reason not to buy this disc.

*** Official "SPIRITED AWAY" Discussion Thread

Glad to see people are finally starting to discuss the film and not the old "subs vs. dubs" workhorse. :D Saw it opening night here in Dallas, and was completely surprised and charmed. Being _very_ familiar with Miyazaki's previous filmography, I was actually very surprised to watch a movie...

Back to the Future -- trilogy box set only?

I also am only interested in the first movie, and am seriously considering holding out for the remote possibility of a single-movie edition release. So long as the transfer and audio are the same, I couldn't care less about any extras I might be missing. I fear I'll have to go through this...

What originally got you into DVD.......

I'm surprised more people haven't cited The Matrix as the reason they got into DVD. The Matrix was the first movie I saw in a long, long time that made me gape in awe at what the silver screen could do. Back then, I wasn't a movie collector by any means. I had no interest in 5.1 sound, or even...

Studio Ghibli movies coming to DVD this year?

http://www.animetourist.com/article1049.html is an interview with Toshio Suzuki (Executive Managing Director and Producer for Spirited Away), John Lasseter (Executive Vice President, Pixar), and Steve Alpert (Executive representative for Tokuma Publishing). It's a cool interview for anyone...

Grave Of The Fireflies: Collector's Series!!!

Sweet. I purchased the Quicktime-quality DVD from CPM a few years ago with the underlying assumption that I would buy a superior R2 version when I had some real money to buy a compatable player. Now, it looks like I won't have to. Sweet. Now, if only Disney would get their thumbs out of...
