Worried my DVDs will look bad on new HDTV

So, first of all, you are all awesome (knowledgeable, generous) for chiming in on this thread. I love hearing about how you have dealt with some of the same issues I'm feeling, the inevitable march of technology, media choices, upgrades, upscaling, etc. You've added so much to my...

Worried my DVDs will look bad on new HDTV

Just a bump to say that you all have provided me with much to think about, and some options and solutions I had not known much about before I posted this thread. I'm glad I brought this up before I just dove into buying a big new HDTV. I hope it helps other people who are feeling the way I'm...

Worried my DVDs will look bad on new HDTV

Ok, you're right. I'm sure my next TV will have the apps already on it, so this becomes an option, I understand. I can take my DVD off the shelf, fondle the slick plastic of the box, gaze lovingly at the cover art (that Jason Stathem, he's pretty handsome), read the liner notes for the nth...

Worried my DVDs will look bad on new HDTV

I think I missed the boat on Oppo, didn't I? I'm missing the boat on a lot of stuff since I was actually involved in the industry. But I'm like a rock. I don't really want to start downloading and storing movies as digital files, although it seems like the hip new way to do it. Turning my HT...

Worried my DVDs will look bad on new HDTV

It was only a matter of time before I was exposed as being woefully behind the tech times! I gobbled up DVD when it was new. I am so nineteen-nineties. I got the last of the great Sony RPTVs. One bulb-replacement so far. I have been sitting in my cave with this, happy as an old hibernating...

Worried my DVDs will look bad on new HDTV

Ah, some great things to think about here. Sam, you get right to my worry. I want a bigger TV. 75" would work in my HT with proper seating distance. "Quality scalers help." Please clarify for me what is a quality scaler? Is it in the player (say I will use a Bluray player to upscale my...

Worried my DVDs will look bad on new HDTV

Thanks for the reply! So, you're playing DVDs on a BR player via, I assume, HDMI from the player direct to the TV. (Or, through the processor?) (Or, are you playing DVDs on the Tosh HD-DVD player via HDMI?) How big is the TV? (Did you buy this TV because it was bigger than your last TV...

Worried my DVDs will look bad on new HDTV

It's been a while since I've posted to HTF, but I figure this is still the best place on earth to ask my silly-seeming tech question. I hope someone can help me out. (If this is posted in the wrong forum, please advise.) Quick Summary: I'm worried that my extensive DVD collection will look...

it's 2013: recommend a player with TOSLINK optical out?

Well, I appreciate that. I appreciate your knowledge and your suggestions. Thanks! The Denon is a workhorse, for sure. Over 10 yrs old, and sounds fantastic. I will work this out some way. I was hoping not to have to spend such serious money on a new player, but if I want to keep my current...

it's 2013: recommend a player with TOSLINK optical out?

Yes it does! (6 CH EXT IN - RCA connectors.) MC

it's 2013: recommend a player with TOSLINK optical out?

In fact, the TV (Sony KDS) does NOT have a DVI connection. It does have an RGB multi-pin connector ("PC-in"). And the ancient Denon is a 5.1 AVR. My current setup simply runs TOSLINK from the DVD player to the AVR (and then speaker wire out to the speakers) and component video from the player...

it's 2013: recommend a player with TOSLINK optical out?

Wow. That's a cool Panny player. S'got optical TOSLINK, too! I will have to seek that out. Why not upgrade or change? I dunno. I have older equipment, the last Sony RPHDTV (KDS) and a pre-HDMI Denon 5.1 AVR, which all work just superbly. PQ & SQ are stellar in my system. I have no real desire...

it's 2013: recommend a player with TOSLINK optical out?

I mention the year in the title because I have a feeling even now that I'm a dinosaur here, looking for a TOSLINK (not coaxial) optical output on a DVD player (or BR player) that's not an expensive OPPO. Can anyone recommend a currently (2013) available player that has TOSLINK optical output...

SALE: lifesize replica "Rick's Cafe Americain" NEON SIGN - Casablanca!

I have a large 6ft x 8ft working neon sign replica of the sign over the door of Rick's bar in the film CASABLANCA: "Rick's Cafe Americain." I need to sell it! Maybe you love the film CASABLANCA? Maybe you're building a CASABLANCA-themed home theater? Maybe you collect neon signs? Or movie...

finally time for a RAISING AZ remaster?

I dunno... Maybe I'm not paying attention. I appreciate your help... I'm just talking about DVD. So, I figured I'd do it in the DVD thread, ya know? I don't know about blu-ray, and knowing that RAISING AZ is out in a blu-ray remaster really doesn't help me. I don't do blu-ray. That's why I'm in...

finally time for a RAISING AZ remaster?

"Son, you got a panty on your head." It's the 25th anniv of the film. http://news.moviefone.com/2012/03/04/raising-arizona-25th-anniversary_n_1344715.html Do you think we could ask politely and have a serious DVD of the film? Anamorphic? Special Edition? Something? Anything? What does anyone...

silence of the lambs, DVD version reviews?

Wow. DVD-basen is a pretty amazing site, thanks for that excellent review/comparison clearinghouse. I'm thinking I should get back to the place and snap up that 2-disc DVD version. Maybe I'll keep the Criterion (for the commentary) and sell of my other accumulated DVD versions. Thanks! MC

silence of the lambs, DVD version reviews?

So, I note at least three DVD releases of the film SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. (If this has been covered in other threads, apologies; I did a search and didn't find this particular thing addressed.) There's the Criterion. There's the original MGM. There's the "better" MGM. Then there's this other...

question about DVD layer change (LACONF 2-disc SE)

And, alas, I used to be such an early adopter... (I've been on the HTF over ten years!) Oh well. (No, this is not convincing me to switch to Blu-ray. Sigh....) MC

question about DVD layer change (LACONF 2-disc SE)

question about DVD layer change (LACONF 2-disc SE)

I knew I'd get that answer, too. That's why I didn't post this thread in the Blu-Ray forum, but in the DVD forum. I'm not the only person still watching DVDs, am I? HTF used to be much more information-oriented. You know, back in the olden days of DVD. [sarcasm, but barely] MC

question about DVD layer change (LACONF 2-disc SE)

On the HTF? People here know the exact frame-reproduction algorithms and color correction hues (and bit rates) for the Chuck Conners/Tanya Roberts C-movie TOURIST TRAP. How could they not know the layer-change info for something like LACONF? I think they just hate me, is all. So, I...

question about DVD layer change (LACONF 2-disc SE)

[sigh] My questions must suck. I never get any replies. Is it my breath? I'll simplify: When's the layer change in the film in the 2-disc Special Edition of LACONF? Anyone know? ...Thanks!... MC

question about DVD layer change (LACONF 2-disc SE)

Last night I watched my old original-issue single-disc DVD of LA CONFIDENTIAL. Once again I was perturbed by the layer change, which (you probably noticed) happens right in the middle of one of Kevin Spacey's best scenes, when the camera is directly on his face and he's delivering a great piece...

"the wall": remastered? which CD is best to buy?

I just listened to Pink Floyd's "The Wall" on CD for the first time in a long time. I might have the original Columbia 2-CD issue, I don't know. But it sounded like crap. Muddy and thick. And so I went and did a search for remastered CDs of it... and I can't figure out if there has been a...

    a gaming giveaway

I don't mean this to be "promotional," I don't work directly for Polk Audio anymore (altho I still do work with them), and I don't want to break any HTF rules here. But I just wanted to let you all know that there's a Polk-sponsored giveaway going on now where you can win a 60" Mitsubishi HDTV...

    Chinatown DVD

You guys used to be all over this kind of thing. I could always count on the HTF to get into the weeds about this kind of stuff, especially with a film of this caliber. Oh well. :( MC

    Chinatown DVD

Huh. My display (Sony KDS) is totally calibrated and looks amazing. My Centennial Collection CHINATOWN, as I mention above, is... dark and dense with no shadow definition at all. Your quoted description here could be describing my impression of the print on the original disc; maybe it's a...
