Need Help building a better sub than my AV15

I have a Tumult and recommend it, but I just looked at the TS parameters on the TC-3000 and it looks really good. You should be able to get it in a small box, and use EQ to flatten the LF response. If it really has an Xmax of 30mm, for the price you can't go wrong. If it has been DUMAX tested to...

    Nintendo Wii.....

Steve - I'm so happy you posted this. My wife bought a Wii for the kids for Christmas, and I was kind of bumming because I thought it might be lame. Now I can't wait for Christmas!

    Capacitor damage

The plastic is usually a PVC material that melts at very low temps. So you are probably OK. Did you accidentally hit it with your soldering iron? If so, no issue. If you got the leads so hot the case plastic melted, then you may want to replace it, just for good measure.

    Over-ear headphone

I have a pair of Sony MDR-V6's. Have had 'em for years. Overall, good bass extension, highs not as detailed as the Grados. Good set of cans, easy to live with.

Grado SR-60 break the price/performance narrier, but will stretch you to $69 for a new pair, including shipping.

Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

Jay, et all: Works great. Spacer System dimmers all have clear backs, and an IR sensor in back, so all you have to do is stick an IR blaster in the wall box and you're good to go. No limit to the number of dimmers you can control this way, and no need to purchase the Lutron controller...

    Need some amp suggestions!

Try Mouser, Newark, or Digi-Key. Here's a link to Pabst DC fans from the Mouser catalog. They have 24 VDC versions. Not sure how the noise will stack up, but at least its a start. http://www.mouser.com/catalog/622/1317.pdf

    Need some amp suggestions!

I have been using a Behringer 2500 to drive a Tumult in a sealed enclosure. This amp is a great value at $300. I'm running it bridged, 2400W. I did a review, it is up on my website. It uses DC fans that are thermostatically controlled. They are pretty quiet, but definitely noticeable. I can...

    RG-6 for speaker wire

Chris, If you're using the normal 14 GA low voltage wiring, two conductors, twisted, in a vinyl jacket, you're good to go.

    Room Size/ Room Ratio

Mark, Don't get too hung up on room size and finding the perfect ratio. While these calculators tell you where a dip or peak might be, they don't tell you how strong it will be. There are other, more important considerations, like using the space you have to best advantage, balancing reflective...

Convergence On old 3 tube projector

Try to find a dealer setup manual online. crtcinema.com is a good place to start. Follow the manual's instructions to the letter, and you'll be amazed at what this thing will do.

    Paradigm Titans/PDR-10 Crossover.

I have the old Titans. Not much dif between 80 and 100. Listen for vocal clarity in the presence of strong bass, and then decide which is best for you.

    with amp to buy?

26l? That's scary. Holy Buckets. I've been running a Beringer EP2500 and a single Tumult in a sealed enclosure. 5l. I can also heartily recommend the Behringer 2500. I've tested it and the review is on my website.

How to set up 4 subs?

I think what gets lost with the concept of multiple subs is that you resort to the pain of doing it to solve a specific problem you may be having. For instance, in my room, the seating is at the room midpoint, and I have a null there no matter where I place my Tumult. Its sad to see 3" of linear...

Easy access to equipment connects in closet?

Thanks for the kind words, Parker. We get so much enjoyment out of our theater. What a great hobby, so many different aspects. All enabled by this forum. The 180 degree rotation idea is a great one, it would definitely come in handy, and I don't think it would be hard to do. I'm in the...

Easy access to equipment connects in closet?

Tom, As the rack slides out on a track and rollers, it comes completely out of the wall and I have full access to the rear of the equipment. No neck-craning or head-twisting required. The rack is made of 3/4" MDF, and is now holding about 300 lbs of gear, including a 5 channel 300 wpc amp that...

She wants to keep it brick! I need a compromise!

Dave, Do a rendering showing all the surface mount panduit you'll need to run outlets etc. to bring the room to code. Then add condensation that will form as heated air touches the cold concrete walls. [unless your foundation is insulated on the outside.] I did a half wall sort of concept in...

Easy access to equipment connects in closet?

Tom, I absolutely hate wall units with no way to get to the back of the equipment. Rear access is worth every penny it costs. I built a slide-in rack to hold all my gear. Atlantic Technologies makes slide-in racks that most pro installers use. These are dressed up with custom cabinetry. Or you...

26 by 16 room, which way to go?

As somebody with a 17' deep theater, I wish I had more depth. Mine is a dedicated room, 11' wide. It will be hard to get more than one row of seats in a 16' deep space, if that matters to you.

Lutron Spacer Installation 101 (Rev. 1/17/06 - Adding IR Emitters)

Jay, In an earlier post, you mentioned; I don't know if there is another sensor in the backbox of the master - that would definitely solve your problem. Be nice to know. If that doesn't work, I've put IR blasters in adjacent walls or the ceiling, (even across the room), aimed at the...

Fabric covering for exposed floor joists?

Hi Tony, The fabric idea is a good one. (Why didn't I think of that?) The Guilford of Maine (GOM) 701 series is the gold standard for acoustic transparency and ease of installation. I would really stretch it well, and staple it close, to avoid sagging. Or, intentionally drape it to make a...

    remote-controlled lighting options

Jay, I have three Spacer System dimmers, remotely located, but didn't use the remote master. Since I have an IR repeater system anyway, I just put an IR blaster in the wall box with the dimmers. Cheaper, and works perfectly. I did use one of the Lutron three-way wall switches in the theater to...

Hi Cam, This is in response to your e-mail. I think these may have already been covered in the thread, so excuse me if I am repeating anything. Amp Setup: Signal into Channel 1 IF XLR, wire shield of cable to Pins 1,3, center conductor to Pin 2. IF 1/4 inch phone, wire center conductor...

    SQ and BMW 5 Series

I have made the following changes so far, and the improvements have been nothing short of dramatic: 1.) Pulled out BMW amp. Give to friend with boat, or save for re-install on sale of car. 2.) Added 4x85 WPC Eclipe Power amp. P/N PA5422. Plenty loud and very clean. .004% THD at full power...

    SQ and BMW 5 Series

Thanks, Gents. The problems with the sound quality are: 1.) Lack of bass. This will be the easiest to fix. 2.) Distortion. Sounds like crossover distortion to me. Definitely an amplifier problem, not a speaker problem. 3.) Lack of punch and muddy mid-bass. The speakers in the car are...

    SQ and BMW 5 Series

I bought a 2002 BMW 530i, and the factory stereo is horrible. The web consensus on the BMW boards seems to be: Keep the Alpine head unit (it is integrated into the car's display and steering wheel switches, speed/volume control, etc.) Keep the factory speakers. Replace the BMW...

    The Commitments Special Edition

I had the old 4:3 P&S R1 version. I just watched the new transfer and the video quality is excellent. No edge enhancement, solid blacks, good color rendition. A huge improvement over the previous version. It's like a fog has been lifted. Doesn't even seem like the same movie. It's a little...

    TL coffin sub...

James, I stand corrected! Thanks. Eric, I have been running 12" sealed DIY stereo subs for music for about 5 years, using ACI AV-12 drivers in 2.5 cu ft enclosures. Room gain compensates for the system -3 dB point of 30 Hz, the Q is approx .7, and the speakers integrate well with my ProAc...
