The Graduate (40th anniv. edition) - any reviews ?

Particularly as the new artwork is just terrible. Shame to hear about the noise reduction, and it'll be interesting to see whether it obscures any fine detail that's visible on the R2-Optimum.

    The Birds: Legacy?

Yes, but so far Universal has not really come through on this title with a transfer/digital restoration that's worthy of the film. The second release was much better, to be sure, and perhaps there's only so much room for improvement. But the Masterpiece Collection, while welcome, is certainly...

The Graduate (40th anniv. edition) - any reviews ?

Yes, very interesting Ron. And you can tell that the earlier transfers also had the white levels set too high. My previous best version... the Optimum R2 ... is completely blown out in that shot of Ben in the church balcony framed against the large window. So, is there a hi-def release of...

    Weeds Season 3

I also feel this series has gone a bit off-the-track, but maybe it's all about the need to wrap-up the big season-ending cliffhanger (itself a nod to more conventional television). This show can't be all about the business, although I suppose credit is due for really playing out the potential...

    David Lynch's "Inland Empire" - 8/14/07

Unfortunately, I've never seen "Renaldo & Clara", and don't know of any source at present. But, in a similar way, "INLAND EMPIRE" reminded me more than a little of Rivette's "Celine and Julie Go Boating".

Opinion: The Best and Worst DVD Commentary You've Listened To?

How can you be so right about Jodo, and so wrong about Maro? ;) Freudian analysis is certainly passe, except in those instances where the director and the film are so thoroughly and irrevocably Freudian. And I'd also go as far as to say that Marion's commentary for "Notorious" is also a great...

    David Lynch's "Inland Empire" - 8/14/07

I am blown away by this release, and this film. And thankfully Absurda had distribution rights in R1, because there's no way a major studio would lavish this sort of treatment on a film that certainly won't appeal to Lynch's more mainstream fans. Not even "Eraserhead" is this unrelentingly...

    David Lynch's "Inland Empire" - 8/14/07

Felix, does the outtake re-edit ("More Things That Happened"?) have the full post-production gloss (no time codes, proper audio and all that), and is it anamorphically-enhanced? (You know, unlike the strung-together "DUNE" outtakes, for example.) Also, I've heard that Best Buy has already got...

    DVD Review HTF Review: Zodiac

This is one of the worst new transfers I've seen in a long while, and I'm very glad to have only rented it. There needs to be a major improvement in transfer quality for the upcoming releases, as the current one is very disappointing.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ To Catch a Thief

Offtopic, sorry... Meil, is that a Pixie-Bob cat in your signature? I have one, and I'm absolutely nuts about them. She completely won over our older cat who otherwise doesn't take too well to unknown animals, and now the two are inseparable (although she took a few beatings in the process)...

The Films of Michael Haneke: 7-disc Collection (08/21)

I think it's all but certain that any "remastering" Kino does will be limited to improperly converted PAL>NTSC transfers of those films it's not yet released... and the same transfer for the others. Why would I say this? Because of every other Kino disc I've ever owned or seen. Some good...

The Films of Michael Haneke: 7-disc Collection (08/21)

But Kino has done a typically worse job than its R2 counterparts on all the other Haneke titles they've previously released. As per usual from them, each are non pre-converted PAL>NTSC transfers with the usual ghosting issues. The prior transfers for "Code Unknown" and "The Piano Teacher" are...

    "The Graduate" 40th Anniversary CE - 9/11

The very first R1 DVD release included both mono and stereo. The mono was dropped after that in each of the reissues. Also, the anamorphic R2-PAL release only has the stereo track. I'm not Blu-Ray or HD-DVD capable yet, but isn't there a hi-def release of "The Graduate" that's out or coming out?

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

It's the "tree of life", at least as Izzi describes it in her part of the story. It also becomes a metaphor for Izzi herself in Tom's portion of the story. And, in both instances, it's a metaphor for the element derived from the tree that "real Tom" is testing for a cancer treatment (and, by the...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Ah, I see. I considered the end of Izzi's portion to be where the story left off after Tommy had spent the night reading it (which I believe ended at the initial encounter between conquistador-Tom and the Mayan priest). I took Tommy's part to include all of that portion depicting his...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

And if I could add one more thing: I don't think this film is meant to be a puzzle, a Rorschach test, or some sort of Mobius strip. I think it was wise of Aronofsky to put in that early scene where Izzi explains her book (and the narrative structure of the film), and makes clear that...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

That seems to be exactly Izzi's motivation. She has come to terms with her own death, at least after the first trip to the hospital that we see. She tells Tom that she's no longer afraid to die, and encourages him to look beyond his simplistic view, to put aside his futile search for something...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Of course the Spanish conquistador part was fiction, written by Izzi in her book "The Fountain" which she presented to Tommy and requested - essentially as her dying wish - that he "finish it". Tommy reads Izzi's firt part of "their" story (the conquistador part), and when he ultimately comes...

    Lionsgate Bunuel boxset, 08/07

I've been hoping to see "La Joven" for years, but didn't spring for the recent Optimum boxset that included it (I had all the other films already, in comparable or better quality). I know nothing of "Gran Casino". Is there any relation between these two titles, other than "Lion's Gate happens...

Darren Aronofsky's sci-fi epic "The Fountain" set to go

Do we need to spoilerize specific comments, 13 pages into a discussion about the film? Ok... Juan, I agree that it seems there may be something more to the astral projection portion of the film, but isn't the obvious explanation sufficient? That it's Tom coming to terms with his wife's death...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ To Catch a Thief

It also appears that the new R4 and new R1 "To Catch a Thief" DVDs are not quite the same. There is a nearly identical frame in the DVD Beaver's review and in one of the R4 screen captures posted here (the shot of Grant sitting next to Hitch in the car). It's certainly not much to go on...

2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

I'm missing big'uns, small'uns, and maybe even some medium-sized "studio indies". I've not even seen the latest films by two directors who've topped my list in recent years (Lynch, Weerasethakul). Maybe sometime by mid-August I'll consider myself to have had sufficient exposure to hazard a...

    24: Season Six thread

More likely cornered by a cougar, dontcha think? Does everyone really think that this season's episodes "play too much like reruns of last season's"? Didn't last season's also seem awfully familiar, and weren't there the same criticisms then? And the season before that? And the season before...

    24: Season Six thread

If I'm insulting "all of the show's fans", then I'm insulting myself along with the rest of you (and, for the record, I don't mean to insult anyone, least of all me). Otherwise, I'm making the same point you are. Smacking our remotes down and indignantly proclaiming these last few episodes to be...

    24: Season Six thread

Well, the Kim/Cougar "subplot" also followed the "subplot" when she found herself in the clutches of that Unabomber type (except that he was really, really cute)... which itself was considered pretty ridiculous until it was immediately outdone in that category. This is a deeply stupid show...

    Survivor: Fiji

I'm certainly not coming to Dreamz' defense as a player. He's still around due to nothing more than dumb luck and being useful to others. But Alex, Mookie and Edgardo were playing penny-ante checkers to Earl's (and Yau-Man's) game of chess. And let's give Stacy props for the insightful (but...

    July Criterions!

We all have our favorites, of course... but, generally speaking, best month for Criterion releases ever? I remember back in 1999 making my first DVD purchases ever, and picking up a slew of the early Criterions (Seven Samurai, Andrei Rublev, The Seventh Seal, etc.). They used to have these...

    Survivor: Fiji

Michelle = not cute? I'd like to see the women where you live! Stacy's nice looking, too, but her skin problems unfortunately detract. I suspect she has the acne more under control in non-Survivor type situations. Still, I'd prefer Stacy with large oozing sores over Lissi, shower-fresh. And...

Children of Men - Discussion thread

Petulant or no, I don't disagree with you, Andrew, and my sarcastic little ripostes were meant only to underscore your point. I think it's starting to become just a little silly for any American in these times to make hash out of England's historic imperialism. It does reek not a little of...
