Asian Cinema - Give us your film suggestions

Second all the recommendations here, especially Brook's desire to see more Yasuzo Masumura released. I'd love to get an opportunity to see stuff like Red Angel and A Wife Confesses. I'd also like to see Sogo Ishii's cult classics from the early 80s -- Burst City, Crazy Thunder Road, and The...

Recommend some Good Foreign Horror Films?

If you don't have a weak stomach, Takashi Miike's Audition. Also, I second recommendations for Franju's Eyes Without a Face and Kiyoshi's Kairo. I'd also recommend a couple other another Kiyoshi Kurosawa movies, Cure and Seance.

Commentary Tracks for really BAD movies!

The director's commentary on the Masters of the Universe disc is pretty hilarious. The thing is total camp yet he talks in total seriousness about his shots as if he had directed a European art house film.

    Katharine Hepburn Dies

Arggg, and I just watched Bringing Up Baby this morning before hearing about this. How cruel, irony. :frowning:

Did this ever happen in a film?

Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang made a movie in 1998, I believe, called The Hole about the outbreak of a dangerous virus that forces people to stay in their homes as often as possible and wear face-masks if they must go out. Pretty bleak film ... let's hope the SARS condition doesn't reach...

Looking for good modern Japanese films...

Some good recent films that examine youth in contemporary Japan: Go (d. Isao Yukisada) All About Lily Chou-Chou (d. Shunji Iwai) ; and anything by Iwai, really License to Live (d. Kiyoshi Kurosawa) And I would second Brendan's Audition recommendation since it does present a contemporary...

    a Classical Music discussion

As someone who's just getting in to classical music (yes, John Williams (moreover, film music in general) was a "gateway drug"), I was having a grand time reading this thread. And then -- it just stopped dead. How does it happen that so many people seem to be rigorously discussing multiple...

S&S 100 Films HTF Forum Challenge

Someone tabulated this over on the Rotten Tomatoes forum. Might not be perfect, but looks good to me. I know the first 25 or so are intact at least -- the S&S site has them listed in order at the User Poll section. Interesting how Au hasard Balthazar took a major leap up while Pickpocket...

    THE RING questions.

    1) It's very good. It's low-key, restrained, and it's very satisfying in the final analysis because the scares build organically from the story, culminating in a couple of scenes with truly terrifying power. 2) It IS available on DVD, but only on Region 2 DVD. There's also a region-free Hong...

Hayao Miyazagi’s ‘Spirited Away’: A Review

Some good news for those who have a region-free DVD player: Spirited Away came out for both Region 2 (Japan) and Region 3 (Hong Kong) DVD today. Since I have the R3 one pre-ordered, I know for sure that its a 2-Disc set and has English subs and a DTS 6.1 Japanese audio track. Of course, I'll...

    2002 Film List

Moderators Note: This is an invaluable and memorable post made at the height of Episode II's release, and will remain permanently on the 2002 Film List. -- JW Updated with Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, an awful mess of a movie, and by far the worst in a series that's gradually...

    Dogtown and Z-Boys

Well, I'm firmly on the side of Ross and Cal on this one. I had a chance to watch Dogtown at a recent festival and loved the heck out of it. It's lively, fast-paced, and a whole lot of fun. It wasn't just me enjoying it, either -- the entire audience seemed to be vastly entertained by it. In...

    Passion of Joan of Arc

I believe the different times are due to variations in the FPS. In prior showings, the film was shown at reduced, incorrect speeds causing the elapsed time to increase by a large amount.

So you stopped watching movies for fun...

I don't think it's so much that someone stops having fun at the movies when they decide to take an active interest in the technical and artistic aspects; it's that filmgoer's definition of the word expands. Fun can be watching something relatively brainless but visually and viscerally...

Our Top 10's of 2001 -- Time To Throw Down

Thought this thread needed a little bump. :) Also, I updated my post with a selection of my 10 favorite individual scenes from 2001 films. I probably forgot a great number in compiling it, and there are certainly other scenes I loved a great deal but didn't make it onto the list, but as it...

Our Top 10's of 2001 -- Time To Throw Down

I don't know about the rest of you, but this has gotta be one of the hardest year-end lists I've ever composed! There were so many great films this year. I really felt sad about having to knock The Others into the runners-up slot; it's a movie I love! In comparison to last year, #9 and #10 on...
