I have a friend who is trying to evaluate his TV options. Originally he wanted something in the 30-34" range, but looking at the prices on those it is not feasible for him at this time. He's looking for a set that will be a worthwhile long-term purchase. I've mentioned that in that case he's...
Thanks guys, I actually found a guy on the Subaru forum selling an Alpine 9815 for a pretty good price and he has the wiring harness for my car and everything so I think I'm going to do that. I'll check Crutchfield for speakers, but that's probably going to wait a little while before I get...
My stock head unit in my 2003 WRX Wagon died and I want to replace it with something. I've never really been "into" car audio so I've asked some friends and they tell me to buy Alpine (and they say it with semi-religious fervor, which tends to frighten me). Is Alpine the end-all-be-all of car...
Geoff (and others), I understand what you're saying, and there's a good chance that you're right. The catch is, I know myself. Actually building a ported sub isn't really the problem, deciding what to build, how to build it, how to tune it, etc. is. I'm the kind of person who will get so...
Bob, that's a nice looking sub! I think ultimately what I build is going to depend completely on how much money I can scrape together, but I'm going to shoot for the Tempest and see what amp I can afford. Coincidentally, I may have a thread with LaserDiscs for sale soon over in Software for...
Long post, sorry. After lurking here in DIY for awhile I think I'm finally going to go for the gusto and build a sub. But first, a few questions. I'm basically looking at building a sealed sub with a mid-Q (.707) using plans from www.adireaudio.com. Though I haven't done any in 2-3 years...
I have an Energy e:XL setup and I'm real happy with it. When my in-laws decided they wanted a home theater setup they gave me a budget and let me go play. I ended up getting them the HTD level three towers and center package, this was when they were phasing out the previous line-up so they were...
It's entirely possible to paint MDF with a good lacquer based paint and a spray gun. The trick is to use plenty of sander sealer on the edges and then at least 2-3 coats of primer. Sand it smooth, dust it off with a tack cloth, and then spray nice and even with a spray gun to attain a nice...
Thought I'd chime in too. Gregg came and calibrated my friend's Toshiba 56HX81 almost a year ago. I meant to post a review, but I was a little busy watching DVD's! He was great! Answered any questions I had and explained it all. It was really cool to watch someone who knows what they're doing...
I've got a friend who has had an RP56 for 13 months, it has recently started getting an H03 error and then the player stops. It won't play anything, it's a real pain in the butt. Looking around he found some people with similar issues: http://rottentomatoes.bizrate.com/ma...,format--.html...
Doesn't Grado make some different earpads for the SR-60 and SR-80? I've heard they make them alot more comfortable, I've also heard you have to give the headband time to stretch a little.

I'm trying to make a living doing web design...
So I ordered and set up a surround sound system for my in-laws. This is to go with the Sony widescreen TV they bought a few months ago. We ended up getting the following: HK AVR520 home theater direct level 3 'Z' package without the subwoofer, two Sony SA-WM40's Panasonic RP82 DVD player...
Ok, I have to go into insane rant mode here, but I'm going to qualify it first by saying I understand why and when some people might want to use a tool like midnight mode when the wife and kids are asleep. In my opinion things like midnight mode, night mode, or any other "feature" that is...
I have recently gotten DirecTV in my house. Until now we only had AT&T digital cable. The decision was mostly because we wanted to get HD-HBO, HD-Showtime, and HDNet with the added bonus of getting digital sound since AT&T doesn't handout cable boxes with digital outputs. When we got it running...
Here's the dilemma: I have a friend that isn't truly a home theater buff, but he enjoys surround sound. He's using someone else's Denon AVR3300 receiver to run two old Cerwin Vega AT-12's as left and right and a pair of Bose (I know, now shaddup) 201 bookshelf speakers in the rear. We've hooked...
My surrounds are mounted near the ceiling and slightly behind the ideal listening position due to SAF. I've got them pointed slightly forward and down towards the listening area it works very well!

I need a JOB!!
I'm willing to go online, but I would want to get full warranties. I don't know about eBay, but I would probably buy stuff off of the Hardware for Sale forum.
I have checked out Home Theater Direct, and it looks pretty interesting, can anyone vouch for their sound?
I'm a big fan of Denon...
My in-laws have moved into a new house, and the basement has a great room for setting up a home theater. They were already starting down this path when they purchased a Sony 65" XBR HDTV last year. Now it's time to really get this rolling, we're looking at doing this at the end of September with...
I've been using AT&T Digital Cable for about 8 months now, and I hate it. The crappy cable box only has composite connections, no S-Video, no digital sound. The picture quality is crap, I've gotten much better with a regular antenna (granted, that's not consistent). The menu is crap too...
I'm not exactly sure what is best, but I set up a friend's 57HX81/RP91 combo full mode and set to auto on the DVD player. It looks great. I'd be interested in suggestions though.
I believe the black level is set to regular, but we might play around with that.
I have also heard that the 50H81 is the general service manual for all xxH81 and xxHX81 TV's. However, there are supposed to be set-specific supplemental manuals for each TV. I haven't found those yet...
Everything I've read and heard suggests what we've heard here. Keep the contrast low, NEVER pause the game with the TV on, and don't play the same game for long periods of time.
All of this only reduces your chances of burn-in, but it does pretty well from all accounts I hear.
