    Hi Def PVR release

With any luck, Bell will release their version of DISH's DVR-921 by the springtime. Two tuners, 250 GB hard drive, and lots of other bells n' whistles. Considering it goes for $999 US, I hope that Bell will sell it for around $1500 CDN or less.

    Digital Cable Box, Uh-Huh, Sure...

RG-6 is a type of coaxial cable, but it has a thicker core (ie. the metal thing sticking out at both ends) and sometimes comes with more isolation (thicker cable overall). This helps prevent signal degration over long distances. Since the wall where my cable comes in from outside is about 40'...

    Digital Cable Box, Uh-Huh, Sure...

"Digital" is becoming an overused term for cable and even satellite companies these days to fiercely compete with each other. For cable companies, "digital" simply refers to some channels being transmitted through the cable stream as a digital signal as opposed to analog. I'm not surprised that...

    RG-6 vs. RG-59

Hi Bob, Considering I only vaguely know how dB works in the signal arena (the only dB I've really seen is when you turn up/down the volume on a reciever and you see the dB value on that change), I'm not sure exactly what the graph is supposed to tell me. The bird's-eye view of it seems to...

What do you think is wrong

I've been experiencing similar problems with my Panny RV41. The problem's really sporadic and unpredictable. It'll run fine for a couple of weeks, then BAM!... a movie will freeze up and I won't be able to eject the DVD without unplugging it overnight. I'm not sure if overheating is the issue...

    A question about progressive scan.

It really depends on the quality of the deinterlacing chip in the DVD player vs. your TV's deinterlacing chip. Sadly, many DVD player manufacturers are supplying mediocre-to-poor chips (see Home Theater Secret's reviews) and it's only getting worse as the manufacturers try to sink their prices...

Need a DVD Player for new HDTV

Hi HanLee, Congratulations on your purchase! I hope you get to fully enjoy your new Panny TV. There is an excellent article on deinterlacing here. You can surf their site for progressive DVD player reviews from the last 3 years. (This year's review is apparently coming out soon). Do...

    New Panasonic DVD-S55S progressive-scan DVD-Audio player: Just $130!

The Canadian Panasonic site lists the S55 at $299.95. Say it isn't so! I really hope that's a misprint... even with US/CAN conversion the S55 should be no more than $210 up here.

Battle of Sonys: 51 vs 46

Hi Alayn, What is the optimum viewing distance between you and your TV? This can affect your final TV size, as if you sit too close, scanlines can become apparent. I sit about 8.5' away from my 43" 4:3 TV, and I've found that watching full-screen DVDs is only borderline acceptable as I...

Sony 46 inch, HDTV, widescreen. Recalled?

Very strange... sounds a lot like a scam to me. Did they ask you to send in your TV first before they would provide you with a replacement?

Another w/s vs. p&s thread (split off from "Universal addresses and fixes BTTF")

Thanks Ken for the definition of Art, I was confusing Art in General with Abstract Art. :frowning: I need to sort stuff out. Let's go back to the original statement from Dan Hitchman that got my attention:

Another w/s vs. p&s thread (split off from "Universal addresses and fixes BTTF")

Hey Michael, Thanks for moving this to a new thread. If I had known this would've grown so fast, I would've created a new thread myself. Thanks for quoting the original line from Cameron. Although it clarifies things up, you must realize how easily the quote could've been misread. Cameron...

Blacker-than-Black on the Panny RP82 - What's the real deal?

Stacey, Interesting, although I personally could not get BTB to appear with progressive mode on using the VE charts. I know that progressive mode was switched on, as my Sony TV disables all DRC modes (including 16:9 vertical squeeze detection) when the progressive mode is activated. If I...

Another w/s vs. p&s thread (split off from "Universal addresses and fixes BTTF")

And exactly what is on the mind of the director? Sure, some directors may place severe importance on the way a movie is framed, but we're talking about Back to the Future here. It was framed at 1.66:1 on LD and Zemeckis didn't complain? No, it's obvious that Zemeckis doesn't consider the...

Blacker-than-Black on the Panny RP82 - What's the real deal?

Hi Stacey, Wow, I never realized I'd get a response from one of the people who participated in the shootout! I feel all blushed... ;) Anyway, kudos to your excellent work on the DVD shootouts. I know it's a lot of hard work for you guys, and if only the DVD player companies would read your...

Blacker-than-Black on the Panny RP82 - What's the real deal?

I tried out the RP82 last month, and although I liked its performance, I couldn't get it to do BTB in any form... ie. composite, S-Video, component (lighter & darker modes), and progressive component. My older Panny RV-41 handles BTB fine in all modes, and I decided to stick with it for now as I...

    2003 Panasonic Players/Recorders teaser...

Why is it that the 'low-end' S35 is listed with progressive scan, but the higher models S55 and F85 do not list it? Is this just another case of Panasonic screwing up their website information?

Is the specially priced RP91 worth it?

Hi Shana, Built in DD and DTS decoders on DVD players are only necessary if your receiver does not decode them already, and the receiver has the necessary 6 analog audio inputs on the back to allow for the connection. It sounds like your receiver already has DD and DTS decoding, so this...
