    Projection TV or Projector

If you can control the light going into that room, Front Projection is the way to go. Remember that most RPTV's are just CRT projectors stuck in a box. You pay for an expensive mirror, box, and screen. With a Front projector, you can optimize any way you want. Best Picture: Used Front CRT...

DLP vs. LCD - The Discussion Thread that Combines Them ALL

Ouch! Where did I say that CRT are as easy as digital projectors to set up???? I said they weren't all that hard. I did it first time without any help and was up and running in a half a day. I haven't had to touch the set up in many months. By the way, in addition to setting up both CRT and...

DLP vs. LCD - The Discussion Thread that Combines Them ALL

PhilS; Until you have actually set up a CRT, I don't think you should be commenting on how hard they are to set up and maintain. As far as the DILA goes, it is a great technology, but if you are watching it with the lights on, you are worsening the already inferior contrast of your projector...

Benefits of a flat screen TV???

Less glare from the tube and less distortion in the image. Worth the $200 IMHO.

    Direct View vs. Rear Projection

RPTV's are so good now days, I don't really see an advantage to direct view TV (except for computer work). Bigger is better! ------------------

DLP vs. LCD - The Discussion Thread that Combines Them ALL

I need to dispel myths - CRT's are not that hard to set up and use and they give you more bang for the buck if you are willing to buy them used. CRT's do have limitations - to really shine, you need a totally dark room (actually this is true of ALL front projectors: DLP, CRT, DILA and LCD)...

    Tung Oil finishing.. ?

The glue has filled the pores and will prevent stain from penetrating wherever there is excess. In general, you should let excess beads of glue dry and then scrape them off instead of wiping while it is wet. For a big spill, you can wipe with a wet cloth, but you will probably get uneven...

TV size for 6ft viewing distance

HDTV, Scalers, and progressive scan DVD's make most calculations obsolete. What you need to do is look at the TV your interested in with a good source (since DVD will be much of what you watch, a progressive DVD player is the way to go). With a good HD source and TV, you can walk almost up to...

    HDTV: FPTV vs. RPTV

There isn't a RPTV in existence that comes close to FPTV for HDTV or DVD's. I totally agree with Vic - for $4000 you can get a decent used FPTV. Just do your research. It is worth it. As far as ease of use goes, the RPTV's are CRT based as well and suffer from the same potential set up...

    front projector questions

Paint a wall with Sherwin Williams Flat White if you want a screen that big (200 in?) The 5 inputs are RGB HV and you can get cable that will take the VGA (output similar to a computer) and terminate with the 5 wires. You can then use this cable to hook up to a HTPC for DVD or a HD receiver...

    Need the antenna

"has anybody tried the Recotron 3000?" AAAAARRRGh - remember the 2nd antenna I kind of mentioned? That was it. If you live on top of the transmitting station with a clean line of sight, the 3000 might work OK. I bought mine at Best Buy (almost killed myself installing it) and it was only...

    Need the antenna

I live about 20 miles from most of the HDTV broadcasts. DO NOT buy the Terk. After buying two similar antennas, I got fair reception some of the time. Go with a true antenna. You are better off with a big antenna in your attic than the TERK outside. I bought the HDTV ready (a bunch of crap...

    Ultimate HTPC

Brian, Sorry I was too busy to respond right away. There are a number of sources for used FPTV. If you are worried about used equipment, stick with folks that back their equipment (See www.avscience.com and others). I bought mine from: http//www.hometheatervillage.com I was very happy with...

    Ultimate HTPC

Brian, On your other topic, I don't know which RPTV take SVGA or 5BNC, but for about the same money as a good RPTV, you can get a used FPTV. Way better picture with huge size/impact factor. These will take the output from an RCA DTC100 and your future HTPC. Just a thought!

Are you sure a PIV is out of your price range? The Dell I have if very quiet and excellent for Video editing where, as you stated, it excels (supposdiely no better for business stuff, but who cares). The Dell can be had for as little as $1500 if you skip the monitor and I can't emphisize...
