I know what you mean about not being able to please everyone (although I suppose putting it on one side would have done that) but the sudden cut seems almost like a mistake. It's just not very well handled.
Have you seen the disc? He says the line and the film just abruptly stops, cuts to black. They should have faded it or something, using a bit of score. It's just very sudden and sloppy for such an otherwise well-made disc.
Travis Brashear, no need to mail me proof, I was thinking of soemthing else, I guess. ;) It is curious that they split it up (and frankly they didn't do a great job of it) but the extras still make this a must-see disc.
Am I wrong in thinking that the old version was a flipper and did therefore have a side break? And if there has ever been a disc worth upgrading for the extras, this is it. The documentary is brilliant.
That's cool. What I saw of the Eureka looked overly sharpened to my eye, but it was certainly better than, say, the old Criterion. I found the new Criterion, however, to be just incredibly beautiful.
Thanks for the comments. Point noted on Technicolor, although I won't edit the review (even though it's standard revisionist style on the internet to change published pieces, I don't believe in it unless there's a serious error, and even then only in a clear addendum.) And, yeah Disney should...
I'd be curious to get Mr. Harris' thoughts on my review of the new transfer of GWTW, since I'm always looking to sharpen my analysis of these DVD releases. http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=13219 I've got some screencaps there as well, comparing the two R1 releases. As for another...
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=13541 This edition is really remarkable. I've read the DVD Beaver comparison that finds some slight cropping in some parts, but the Eureka release without (or with less) cropping doesn't look nearly as good as the new Criterion.
Good point. I thought that that ringing might be edge enhancement. I'm not sure if it's possible to know what's causing it, but it's definitely not present in the new transfer. I had some other shots I wanted to include but I'm at home today and none of the capture software I'm trying on the...
It's true that the screen caps don't mark a HUGE difference in quality thanks to the earlier release being pretty damn good (especially for 1998) but inthe last detail comparison look at the blinds. There's a pretty big difference in how natural they look. (The wagon spokes are a tougher...
I have a lengthy review of the Mean Streets disc up at Link Removed if you wanna read more about that one. I suspect a lot of Goodfellas fans are trying to decide whether to get just that or the whole set. This might help you decide.
Hmmm... I've been thinking about getting the new Zenith 1080i player for my Zenith C32V37 but I don't know if it'll have a significant impact. Obviously there's no way to know until it comes out.
I got a DVI-D cable from Pacific Custom Cable for $25 or so. It's digital so it shouldn't be any better or worse than a Monster (so long as the 1s and 0s get through). All a most expensive cable might (or might not) add would be additional shielding or stuff like that but not necessarily...
The mixed review on the Sammy are turning me off. Elliott, Am I to understand that the component 1080i on the LG machine is preferable to DVI? That sounds interesting. Where did you get yours?
Weird, I just posted a thread about the XV-N50BK. I've had it for nearly a month. The stuttering is noticeable sometimes which, led me to believe it was only certain discs. Now I just discovered all these reviews (CNet, Amazon) that talk about the stuttering and it seems it's actually the...
I noticed a stuttering on horizontal pans on the JVC XV-N50BK DVD player in some DVDs but thought it might be due to individual DVDs. Now I just read a bunch of complaints of this exact problem on CNet and in Amazon's customer reviews. They all claim it's a problem with the actual player. Anyone...
That's what I was thinking. I was going to subscribe to mo' expensive DTV just to watch Alias and Angel in HD but if I get "broadcast" channels without doing that or running an antenna then this TV is the man!
Cool. I thought I'd ask here because folks are very knowledgable. Over there the suggestions, while sometimes helpful, are often of the "the zoom function ROCKS! It totally gets rid of the black bars!!!!" variety. I'm specifically trying to compare this set to the Samsung TXN3298HF. Those are...
