    What is SVM

SVM stands for Scan Velocity Modulation. Basically, what it does is vary (modulate) the speed of the scan during the time it takes for the electron gun to scan the tube from the left side of the picture to the right side of the picture. If the picture is bright in an area, it slows the scan...

Calibration: My evening with Gregg Loewen

Hey wait a minute, I'm the "all around good guy". I have proof, check it out at www.imagingscience.com under personnel!

I know this gets asked a lot but...

There is a great loss of resolution displaying 16x9 pictures on a 4x3 TV. For example, arbitrary numbers, (that do apply exactly to 1024x768 DLPs). Let's say that the set has 1024x768 pixels. Now in order to display a 16x9 picture on this 4x3 set we must have black bars on top and bottom...

    Question about convergence.

Semi correct, The newer models have scalers and thus only need to be converged once for EACH scan rate. So enter 480i/P, converge, then enter 1080i, and converge again. I can't remember for sure, but the latest model Toshiba sets (HDX82?) convergence may be completely global as they upconvert...

    Toshiba SVM disabling

Scott, Correct, the moment you make a change in "Movie" mode you are now in preference mode, but the SVM will not turn back on as long as you start the tweaking from "Movie" mode.

What's the largest size tube tv?

Hi Jack, The real reason that consumer direct view sets top out at 40" is not related to their weight, although I agree it gets a bit impractical. The real issue is that any bigger and the tube would be too deep to fit through a front door! That is the only reason and believe me, if they...

    Screen removal affecting geometry?

Are you sure you put the fresnel lens back in to the set with the proper orientation?

    Toshiba? or what?

I have been faced with this same decision for a replacement bedroom set. I have calibrated countless Sony's and a few Toshibas. I'm going with the Toshiba because the primary color of red is much closer to the SMPTE C spec than the Sony red. Either set is good, I prefer the accuracy of the Toshiba.

    Toshiba SVM disabling

Select "Movie" mode, then you can tweak from there. The SVM will not turn back on as long as you first enter movie mode, then tweak the other controls.

    Question about convergence.

Yes, that model requires seperate convergence for each aspect ratio. Here are some tips. Do not touch convergence unless the set has been making a picture, preferably screen filling, for at least two hours. Never touch convergence of any kind unless the set is fully warmed up as above...

    Tosbiha 57HDX82 / SD4800

My recommendation would be to use the "Movie" mode of the set and start any tweaking you are going to do from there. I would also recommend that you use your DVD player in non-progressive mode on this set as it will upconvert the 480P to 540P. It actually does a better job of upconverting 480i...

I know this gets asked a lot but...

After calibration, the Sony 34" HDTV is quite a good looking set. The only thing it won't do on your list is 720P native, but I'm unaware of any set in the catagory you are looking in that does.

I never realized that HDTV was so complicated!

Hi Johnny, You can use the Dish 6000 with that TV no problem. You will connect the 6000 to the Sony via component video. In the Dish 6000 set up menu, you will select 1080i. I would also connect the 6000 with an "S" video connector. When watching non-HDTV, you will get the proper black level...

Overscan - surely its in the source equipment?

Hi Guy and all, The Overscan test pattern on VE is indeed off center. This occurred on many of the geometry test patterns that are on that disc. Title 20, chapter 5, the anamorphic test grid, is centered correctly in both the horizontal and vertical planes, but the circles aren't perfectly...

    Hanging the screen/weight issue

Adam, I would suggest that you inquire with the screen manufacturer for this type of information, I'm sure that they have experience in this matter and will be glad to assist. In the event that something got damaged, it would be better for you if you had been following their advice.

    Calibration Query

Andy, You should get the set professionally calibrated by a technician that does this everyday for a living. It is hard to convince people to do this, but talk to anybody who has had it done, and they will say it is the greatest bang for the buck in home theater. Jim Doolittle [email protected]

Black Level, 7.5 IRE, 0 IRE,

Absolutely Guy, And to further confuse, here are the specs for component video levels in both the digital and analog domains. In the digital domain, component video black is supposed to be 16, and white is supposed to be 235. This is a particularly overlooked aspect of digital component...

Black Level, 7.5 IRE, 0 IRE,

Hi Guy and all, Yes, a great subject of confusion for many. I would like to clarify a few points about the different black levels, 0 IRE and 7.5 IRE. I've never heard it called NTSC verses the Japanese system, but rather NTSC verses component video. Quite simply, the dynamic range of all...
