I stumbled upon this gem some months ago. It’s a short film. Very captivating. https://www.filmriot.com/blog/the-candidate-short-film/

What do you value in a "walk around" lens?

I like to limit myself and stimulate my own creativity by going for primes. Makes you think more about composition. For weight, size, speed and sharpness, primes also win. They are the only way to go as far as I',m concerned. My nifty fifty is my most used lens of all, but I've set my sights on...

Things You Wish Will (or Won't) Happen Before You Die

I would have to say humans on Mars. I'm in my late 30s and I'm starting to doubt I'll live to see it. The pioneering spirit when it comes to space exploration isn't what it used to be. Humans on the moon again, would be ok, too :-)

Prometheus 2 begins filming in the fall

I just finished watching Prometheus for the first time. I had really high hopes for this, Being a fan of Ridley Scott and Giger's biomechanical art for many years. And lo and behold, almost all of my expectations were satisfied. What an amazing film. I'm really surprised by the antagonism...

Hardwood floors in the bedrooms and kitchen? Any thoughts?

I've installed an ash wood floor in the bedroom and living room in our old house. In Scandinavia oiled wood floors are popular. They tend to feel much warmer than urethane treated floors and we fancy the natural look over the shiny floors. Also, if you put it on top of a concrete floor, the...

Why do I need a Toslink cable?

The toslink from the TV to the receiver would most likely be to output sound from your TV, to the speakers connected to your receiver. I believe newer TVs have a bi-directional HDMI connector that allows audio to be transmitted both ways, so in that case you wouldn't need the toslink.

YPAO , why does it apply gain rather than damping?

Well, actually YPAO seems to do a little bit of both. Has anybody experimented with this? The established way of equalizing, is to damp frequencies rather than apply gain, I believe. Otherwise you'd introduce relatively more noise to the signal, right? So why does YPAO apply gain, at all? I know...

Brands that are simple and high quality

Hi, It's been a while since I last frequented this forum - I'm glad to see it thriving, still. Becoming a father of two kids has certainly limited the time for hobbies such as HT, photography among other things. For good or worse, it so happens that kids are growing older and dad is beginning to...

Can you switch between two email accounts without shutting down your browser?

Hi Stan, There should be a "Sign out" or "Log out" button/link somewhere. That ought to take you back to the login screen without having to shut everything down.

Are you changing your behavior in response to current events?

I often wonder how much economic downturn there would be, if you took the media out of the equation.

First thoughts on recently acquired Alien Anthology

I don't know if Prometheus is directly linked to Alien. I thought I read it somewhere, but I was too lazy to check the validity of the article. It'll be exciting to see where Fox will take the Alien series next. It's dead in the water as it is now. If for nothing else, hopefully money will...

First thoughts on recently acquired Alien Anthology

john, my thoughts exactly. I sense some, perhaps, youth rebellion in Fincher's decision to kill off Bishop, Newt and Hicks. I can certainly understand Camerons critique - the killing of the crew sort of nullified the whole point of Aliens. One thing I have trouble understanding, is the fear...

First thoughts on recently acquired Alien Anthology

Thanks for your comments. I wasn't aware of the Superman thing. I suspect filmmakers/studios would be a little reluctant to the idea, in fear of the destroying the whole illusion that cinema is. But in this culture of ours, shopping around and picking and chosing what we find useful, the idea...

First thoughts on recently acquired Alien Anthology

Hi, I just picked up the Alien Anthology set on bluray. I'm extremely pleased with it! One thing that has come as a surprise to me is the incredible candidness of the supplementary material. Kudos to 20th for telling it like it was! Anyway, having been a long time fan of Alien and Aliens...

    Help Me....I've listed 5 receivers

I have the Yamaha 765. All-in-all I'm quite pleased with it. It performs well in pretty much every situation. I just think it has way too many features to my liking. Next time I'm going to put my money into more watts instead (I'll probably go NAD). Features mean circuits and circuits mean sound...

Price of a "large" popcorn at your theater?

I usually sneak a soda in under my jacket, my gf as well. Call me cheap, but our local theater has a habit of stopping the projector the moment the credits start to roll. We have made them aware that this is unacceptable, but they still do it. End result, they are taking a little bit from us...

    Yamaha RX-V765 just arrived

Let me start off by saying that I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. It will be another week before I can give it a good test run, because vacation is imminent. First impressions are very good, though. Build quality seems to be fine and I'm pretty sure the front panel is metal (I wasn't...

    New DVD/CD player

Well, I do have an HTPC and a Synology NAS, but I guess I'm a little old fashioned when it comes to music I'm not too keen on navigating menus, browsing folders and so on. I prefer to just pull a cd off the shelf and stick it in the player. Maybe I should get a demo of a newer generation...

    New DVD/CD player

My old dvd-player doesn't even have a display, and I don't want to turn on the TV just to see track numbers when I play cds. Also, the tray is coming apart, so it definitly needs to be replaced. I don't want to use a bluray player for cds, because I don't want a unit that takes several seconds...

    New DVD/CD player

Hi, I'm close to buying a new Yamaha receiver, RX-V765 and in addition to that I need a new DVD/CD-player. I haven't kept up with the development in the DVD department for several years. I'm at a loss as to what the important factors are when shopping for a DVD-player these days. I will only...

    Yamaha Amps - Opinions?

I am considering the very same receivers. One thing that strikes me though, is that the 1019 weighs in at just 19 pounds. The Yamaha 765 is 24.3 pounds. I know weight could be anything, but still, it's something I look at when I decide. The 765 has Burr-Brown on all channels + preout for all...

    Thoughts on NAD quality

Thanks John. Judging from the feedback, it seems the quality is up to par with other brands at least. That's good. I will most likely include NAD in my audition tour. Thanks guys. Could someone elaborate on the HD-audio thing I mentioned above, please?

    Thoughts on NAD quality

Almost two weeks to get a reply - that's unusual for HTF. I had actually given up on this thread, but thanks for posting Ryan, NAD's sound quality is actually what impressed me the most when I listened to it at a friends place, years ago. I have been a little apprehensive about NAD until...

    Thoughts on NAD quality

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my old Denon AVR-600RD ProLogic receiver this year. One of the candidates I've considered is NAD. However, some people seem to have experienced quality issues with NAD receivers in the past, but how does it look these days? Is NAD generally considered a more...

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Do you get perforated toilet paper at work?

We got the best stuff at work!! It's a single sheet dispenser, like the tissue dispenser you will find at a cafeteria counter, only this paper is soft as a baby's butt! I think it's Kimberly Clark too. Nothing comes close to this! This is the Ferrari of ass wiping. If only we had this at home...

This is my last day at work! How was yours?

My last day was at the time when the "new economy" took off. You know the one where company stocks go up 5% and profit is not an issue to worry too much about. Anyway, when the bubble burst venture capital on which the company heavily depended upon dried up and we were told that the company had...
