    3D Blu-ray Review Life of Pi 3D Blu-ray Review

Thanks for that, I watched this last night & could not figure out the reasons for the aspect ratio change. Now it makes much more sense. I actually didn't even notice the switch to 2:35 until the fish started jumping over of the black bars. Very, very cool effect & demo material for years to come.

Do I Really Need a Receiver?

A receiver is exactly what you need. Today's receivers function much more as home theater hubs than as ways to play music. I do use mine to play tunes from time to time, but it's primary function is to provide audio & switch video for three types of devices you listed. Also, most of those...

Is an upscaling 2D to 3D television able to connect and play 3D movies from a 3D Blue Ray player?

Yes, they are compatible & this is exactly what you should pair up with the TV. The TV is capable of displaying passive 3D in addition to upscaling. So if you buy 3D blu ray discs, you will be able to watch in true 3D.

No sound from tv to homecinema

Yes, the RCA cables are a bad decision. This TV ONLY has optical audio outputs so you're probably hooking the RCA cable to an input. Which is why you're not getting sound. Also, you don't say if you're using a cable box, but the best option would be to have the optical going from the cable...

chopped up aspect ratio on movies on tv???

You should've been around in the 80's. Every single movie that was released to home video or TV was cropped to fit a 4:3 screen. It wasn't until Laserdisc started offering movies in their original aspect ratios in the early 90's that it was even possible to see the entire picture outside of a...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Well, for starters don't release them exclusively as $200 box sets. I would LOVE to have some films in this collection, but not all of them. But I can't justify spending $200 just to get the films I want. Same with the Dick Van Dyke blu rays. I'm tired of these all-or-nothing box sets.

3D Why is my 3D movie not as nice as at the store?

Another thing people rarely mention is to check the position of your TV. I have the LG 5600 & notice the 3D effect changes depending on location. If I'm on the couch & the TV is at eye level, it's perfect. But if I sit on the floor or stand up & look down at the TV, the 3D effect is as if...

GWTW and Wizard of OZ again in 2013

I think Moe is referring to Jackson's reconstruction of the 'lost' spider scene in the 1933 King Kong bonus features, not the remake. That it might be interesting to take that approach to the jitterbug sequence.

    NFL OverRuns

Sure, but if you're got other shows occupying the tuners after the delayed program was scheduled to end it causes conflicts. And Sunday night is a pretty busy night for quality TV. I find it easier just to avoid CBS programming on Sunday nights altogether. There have been a few programs I...

cnt get surround sound working on samsung

Most (if not all) TV's will only pass a surround signal if you're using the internal tuner via antenna. If you feed it optical in from the Tivo & then pass it back to the receiver, it will only be 2 channel stereo. What you need to do is bypass the TV and hook the Tivo's audio directly into...

Massive reissue program on SACDs and audiophile LPs announced for Norah Jones

I'm ecstatic that SACD seems to be making a semi-comeback. Though kind of disappointing that only Come Away With Me is in multichannel. Not sure what's really gained on the LP's though, her entire catalog has already been released on 180 gram vinyl. And they sound great.

Streaming: What is the best service and means for paid rentals?

I've found VUDU to have the best quality among the streaming PPV services. Most new releases are available in 1080p with Dolby Digital Plus audio (if you have a receiver capable of decoding it). Plus their catalog is much deeper than most others.

#*@X&$ !! daylight savings time got me again!

See, that's the thing. Arizona doesn't observe DST so their sun comes up at 5:20 on the longest days of summer and goes down around 7:30. I'd MUCH rather have that extra hour of daylight in the summer evenings when I'm awake than just get an extra hour of sleep in March. People who hate DST...

HD masters without a blu-ray (yet)

Yes, VUDU is a streaming PPV service. They have a vast library of titles available in 1080p HD that aren't on Blu Ray. The quality is quite good, depending on your internet connection. Most of Hitchcock's 1950's - 1970's films are available in HD, from the better known titles like Rear...

HD masters without a blu-ray (yet)

VUDU has a ton of movies mastered in HD that haven't made their way to Blu Ray yet. I was surprised to see a vast amount of Hitchcock and a lot of other old stuff I've been waiting for. Haven't movies been mastered in HD since almost the beginning of DVD though? I remember seeing on even...

What is THEE best Blu-Ray movie

Psycho. I've seen this movie on scratchy old late night movie prints, VHS, laserdisc, etc. But watching it on Blu Ray is astonishing. Every frame has the depth & clarity of a Life magazine photograph. Apocalypse Now is a close second.

How big of an image can I get in this room, using a projector?

I've got a similar setup. But I think that your problem is going to be that the picture is too big. You don't have a lot of space from the top of the TV to where the ceiling begins. It looks like you won't be able to project at much bigger than your TV size & not have any bleed over onto the...

    No monthly charge DVR.

I got one of these when it was branded as the DTV Pal. It essentially works like a VCR in that it's timer based recording, but it does record in hi def (unlike the two above) & allows two recordings at the same time. It also pulls in guide data so you can just click on the program in the guide...

How can I get more audio volume from my center speaker?

Hit the audio button on the remote. After scrolling through bass/treble/late night/etc it will allow you to adjust the volume levels of your center & subwoofer. If you want to adjust the other speakers, you can do this from the setup menu using option #2-4.

3D Frustrating, pathetic lack of 3D software...

I see this again as much of a content failure as lack of consumer interest. I eagerly bought into both formats, but there was just nothing to play on them once you got them home. Same with 3D. If you don't make the software attractive, nobody needs/wants the hardware.

Blue Ray vs DVD... what is the difference? Seriously?

Well, therein lies your problem. Although it's technically possible to output HD via component, the majority of Blu Ray discs/players will only output HD via HDMI. I tried hooking my Samsung up via component to see if I could use the HDMI for something else & was amazing at how downgraded the...

    Onkyo 508 - Zone 2 Question

Right after the step where you selected Zone 2 & were then given the option of Front High or Surr back, you should be choosing Surr back. By selecting to use your extra two speakers as Zone 2, you've forfeited the Front High option & nothing should be set to that.

    HDTV's & "Upconvertable" DVD Players

For the most part, upconverting is just a marketing gimmick. Your TV will upconvert the signal anyway. That said, you can probably get a better picture out of your existing player by checking the following: As Matt H said, make sure you're connecting with at least componenet cables (Red...

Men of a Certain Age - season 1

This looked good from what I could watch, but I really wish it was on another network besides TNT. It's impossible for me to enjoy a show on this network. The first 30 minutes there's a big block of text at the bottom left telling me that I'm watching MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE, along with the huge...

My top 5 pet peeves of the moment

    1) Phone trees where they ask you to input your account #. And then whoever finally picks up asks for your acct # again. I've never ONCE had them know this from the input on the keypad. Why do they even ask? 2) People (and by people I mean women) who wait until their purchases are rung up...

    Getting audio into my receiver?

HDMI carries both audio and video signals via 1 cable. Send both HDMI outputs from your components to the receiver, then send the 'monitor' HDMI out from the receiver to the TV.

"He's not dead yet, Jim" S-DVD sales seem to be holding their own

All Blu players are perfectly capable of playing SD DVD's. There's no need to keep an SD player around. I've found when discs are priced at $30 there are very few that I want to buy at that price point. $15 vs $30 is the difference between an impulse buy and a well thought out purchase.

Why I Am Not An Early Adapter Of Blu-Ray

Yeah, I sometimes think people value these more as bullet points on the box cover than for the features themselves. And I'll never understand why people think they are FORCED to re-buy everything. Movie production is not going to stop & old DVD's work just fine. Buy new stuff in HD and keep...

    What is this decade called?

What did they call it the last time around (1900-1909)? I fully expect we won't have a universal title until the next decade when music compilations and VH-1 specials have to come up with something.
