The image is nice, but it's unfortunate that what is now the most widely available version of the film has its sound compromised by an "improved" mix that omits a fairly signficant line of dialogue during the "Memo from Turner" sequence. This is the most egregious alteration, but a comparison...
If the captions were created using a master with the line already muted, then the captioners would have followed the audio and indicated [MOUTHS], perhaps basing the text on a dialogue list of the film created from the correct audio. But the captions were likely created far downstream of the...
Well, the Warner chat is coming up on February 26; if this issue isn't addressed before then, it should certainly be brought up at that time. I've been waiting years for this to make its way to DVD, and I'm quite disappointedto find it has such an obvious flaw, especially as all other home...
Can anyone comment on the geometry discrepancies most notable in the DVD Beaver screengrabs? The notes concede that it is not noticeable in normal viewing (i.e., when not doing a direct comparison), but which DVD image has the correct proportions?
It would be nice if you could update "Demonlover" to include the domestic Palm Pictures releases. Both offer an anamorphic image with removable subs, which easily trumps the Alliance image. And the unrated cut should rank at the top in the comparison, as it has a second disc of special...
You can also look for anamorphic distortions to determine whether it was shot that way. Look for out of focus backgrounds being horizontally compressed, also lens flares that contain a horizontal line stretching across the screen.
The U.S. release title is just "Mystery of Rampo." As far as I know, there has only been one version screened in the U.S., the more surreal, producer approved cut. The other version was only shown in Japan (released concurrently with the producer's version) and it was not a popular or...
Ugh! I was really looking forward to this release. Guess I'll be looking into getting the UK version too. I'd really like to see a response from the studio on this.
I only have the Canadian version and have not compared the transfers directly, but it has exactly the same features as the domestic DVD and I would be surprised if there was a notable difference in picture quality.
The domestic version has really distracting compression artifacts -- at the end of the film, when Ewan McGregor and Christian Bale are sitting in the bar, there is an intended graininess to the image. However, the film has been compressed at a level where you can see the grain shift as each...
It appears that the Alliance Atlantis DVD of "Far from Heaven" uses the films original poster art, so I will be buying that version rather than the domestic release. I don't know who's running the show in the marketing department, but the decision to replace one of the most distinctive and...
The correct aspect ratio for "Baby of Macon" is 2.35 to 1. It was an anamorphically-shot film, like "Cook." The correct aspect ratio for "Drowning by Numbers" is 1.85 to 1. It was presumably shot with a hard matte, as the full-frame NTSC tape and laserdisc releases were obviously cropped...
I believe the black and white sequences are meant to be monochromatic. The color hues are due to their being printed on color release stock -- you can never quite get this to be pure black and white, it will always end up being bluish or reddish. The "color" of these black and white sequences...
It would be nice to have the information about "The Fluffer" on a separate thread, so that people don't have to scroll through 15 pages of miscellaneous discussion to discover this.
I'm very disappointed that this is not anamorphically enhanced, although the scaling feature of my Malata has...
It might come as a slight consolation to those without this DVD that, being a screener, there is text saying so burned onto the lower part of the screen at intervals. It can be distracting. P.S. Does anyone know why they windowboxed the letterboxing for this episode? My VHS copy had black...
The Playboy comment was made, I believe, because not only the witches were naked in the film, but Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene was visualized as Lady Macbeth's nude sleepwalking scene.
A letterboxed transfer of this film was shown on Bravo (edited) and the Independent Film Channel a few...
Re: "Wilde" on DVD, DVDFile had this today: Last but not least we have a special edition of the drama Wilde, based on the life on Oscar Wilde, also due on 3/19 with full specs forthcoming...
Also, I just wanted to throw in another vote of appreciation for "All Over the Guy." I've suffered...
I spoke to Joel Silver of the Imaging Science Foundation recently and he said that while the disc was behind schedule, Joe Kane was still working on it, implying that it would eventually come out.
He also mentioned the Sound & Vision disc, which he hoped would reach a wider audience with its...
