Why so many removable devices suddenly showing up in MY COMPUTER?

Keep in mind that other devices, like printers & other multi-function devices (all-in-one printer/fax/copier) often have built-in card readers. In addition, digital cameras, iPods, etc. can show up as removable drives. If you didn't install any devices or new software recently but they suddenly...

Need to do some keystroke logging/screen capture

Thanks for those links, guys. I have since found several programs to do it, but I was mainly curious about your experiences and whether you found it useful. The prices for the fairly robust programs range from $30-$100.

Will a 500mhz 128mb ram PIII run XP?

That should be no problem. I'm actually running XP Professional on a P2 400MHz notebook with 128mb RAM and a 6GB hard drive. It's slow for any serious work, but it works fine for an internet station & word processing.

Need to do some keystroke logging/screen capture

We're worried about what another family member walked in on the other day. Can any of you recommend or share your experiences with any software for monitoring your home PC? It is a Windows XP Home computer, about 3 months old so it should handle most programs just fine. We need to find out what...

    Simple DVI question:

Yes, many (if not most) mid to high-range video cards are able to support this feature out of the box. I have this setup at work (with 2 CRT monitors using the VGA interface) and at home (with 2 flat-panel displays using a DVI interface). Both my work and my home PC's have video cards with...

    Liquid cooled cases

A while back (maybe a year ago) a discussion came up about liquid cooled cases. I've done a little searching here and on the internet, but haven't come up with anything like the pages & pics that people had posted here. Can you post some links or pics of this stuff, please? Thanks!

    Windows XP desktop icon problem

This may be because another user on this PC has their profile set to a lower resolution than yours. I don't know why it does it, but I think there's a good chance that's what it is. If everyone has the same screen resolution settings, this shouldn't change at all. Good luck!

Help me design a super fast Dell laptop...

I have a Latitude D800 series, with the widescreen option. It has a 1.7 GHz Centrino processor, 1GB RAM, 1920x1200 WUXGA screen, integrated Bluetooth, integrated WiFi (A,B,G - up to 54Mbps), DVD+RW burner, Firewire, 10/100/1000 ethernet, 128mb video card, port replicators for home & office, etc...

With a wireless Gateway/Router do I need a software firewall anymore on wired comps.

I run both, and I still get Trojan Horse attack attempt alerts on my software firewall (Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall) even though I'm behind a hardware firewall/router. So I would recommend running both if you can. - Tom -

    Security Suites. Any Good Ones?

I whole-heartedly endorse the Norton Internet Security product. My job is to protect some very sensitive computer networks, and I think this product is GREAT for home or small networks. We use much more robust systems to protect our networks, but this is an excellent solution for someone who...

    how bout them dells?

Over the past few years, I have paid my dues supporting Dell, Gateway, Micron, Compaq, IBM, and home-built pc's etc. in government environments. I worked for the Air Force supporting their users & servers and now work for a state agency in IT. Whenever possible, I still go to Dell first when...

    How Do I Erase A DVD+RW ?

If you're using Roxio ECDC 5.x, one of the easiest ways is to open the "Data DVD project" app. Then in the toolbar, go to-> Disc>Erase Disc - Tom -

    installing a WIN2K server

I agree with Rod on this. It is really pretty easy. The install basically goes like a wizard. It only gets a little more involved as you add the components/features to it (such as making it a DNS server, DHCP server, WINS server, etc.) Also, remember that if you're not going to use it as a...

Upgraded to XP, now I have a dial-up question.

I agree that your co-worker sounds like he's full of it. Anyway, the difference may lie in either: 1) the driver that Windows XP is using for your modem. You may want to check the manufacturer's website for the latest driver and try that. 2) the phone number that the connection is using...

    Wireless router positioning

It turns out that the higher a Wireless Access Point (WAP) is, the better the signal range is. So, mount the WAP as high as you can. The WAP doesn't need to be above your other components, but it helps. Remember, though - if the WAP is not secured properly, increasing your signal range...

can I use my TV as a monitor?

I've tried this on a couple of different computers and the results were extremely disappointing. The picture was not only poor quality (in terms of sharpness, etc.), but also distorted and the borders were totally uneven. It wasn't worth using at all. The reason I tried it in the first place...

    Microsoft Cordless Mouse

I use both the MS Intellimouse Explorer (optical mouse with cord) and the MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer (cordless optical mouse) on a daily basis. Between the two, there is a definite (albeit slight) lag and inaccuracy in the cordless version. I really like both, but for games I'd definitely...

    Lots of Windows XP questions

Timon, The "C:My Music" folder is common to all users the "C:Documents and settings...My Music" folder is specifically for when you log on. Windows XP keeps separate profiles for everyone who logs in, so when your buddy logs in using his username, it won't show him any of your pictures...

Stupid question time, again: What's the difference between LAN & Ethernet LAN?

Yes, they are the same thing. Also, a PC with a LAN card should be able to communicate with a DSL/Cable modem just fine (assuming the LAN card in the PC is an ethernet card)

    Splitting DSL between computers

Nothing against him personally, but I'd have to STRONGLY disagree with Randy_T's recommendation of getting a wireless router. Right now, wireless networking is extremely insecure, especially if you're using DHCP. In case you're not using a firewall, you should really do that as well. I ended...

Im getting DSL, whats a good firewall?

If you want an effective, easy-to-use product and you're willing to spend ~$50, Norton Internet Security is a very good program which includes Norton Personal Firewall. You can have it automatically manage your firewall or you can pick very specific settings if you really know what you're...

Can I use an A/B type switch to connect a VCR and DVD player to a TV with 1 input?

I second the above post. I just helped a friend out with this, and she got an RF modulator at Best Buy for $30. It had a coax input, RCA left, right & video inputs, and a coax output. It did come with a power supply, so make sure you have an extra outlet available.

    Does DVL 90 Play VCD

I believe the original DVD standard for players required that they be able to play VCD's as well as music CD's. In that case, your DVL-90 should play VCD's since it plays DVD's.

LawrenceK, What kind of problem did you have with yours? I guess it wasn't covered under the warranty since you mentioned it was an expensive fix.

Which entry-level DVD players should a newbie avoid?

Well, Success! She got a progressive scan player and she actually said that she thought the HDTV's were "really cool!" She said that's the next thing she'll get. She still hasn't told me which player she ended up getting, but I'm just glad she has one now, too. Thanks for your help, everyone!

Which entry-level DVD players should a newbie avoid?

She doesn't show any interest in upgrading her TV, but who knows. I did let her know that having progressive scan certainly wouldn't hurt, and that she should try to get one that is MP3 compatible.

Which entry-level DVD players should a newbie avoid?

I'm sending a friend of mine to Best Buy with my preferred customer coupon this weekend because she's going to buy a DVD player. I have had my Toshiba 3108 for a few years now, and so I've been totally out of the loop on the current players. She asked me which kind to avoid and I thought some...

Help - Stevie Ray Vaughn and his music in movies.

Don't forget the epic film :) "Back to the Beach" where he plays "Pipeline" with Dick Dale while Frankie Avalon tries to impress Annette Funicello. For those of you who may not know, Pipeline was an early 90's comedy spoof on the "Beach Blanket Bingo" type movies. [Edited last by Tom Lowden...
