Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)

You know what I liked most about this movie compared to the first two? It's what it DIDN'T have. It didn't have all of those moments that Ep.I and Ep.II had that just took me right out of the movie... - The dumb two-headed announcer at the Pod race. - All the dumb things the droid army guys...

OT: Ultimate A/V (formerly SGHT) goes T.U.

Sigh. I too was more than a bit bummed when my issue of Home Theater showed up with a cover that said to the effect of "Ultimate AV is defunct. Here's this other thing to cover out contractural butts." I've been a subscriber since the first issue (I'd been a subscriber to Stereophile, but...

Head units without flashing lights and tiny buttons?

I'm looking for a basic, simple, decent sounding head unit. I don't want a bunch of flashing lights, useless features, tiny buttons, and hard to read displays (yes, I just eliminated almost every aftermarket car audio head unit in existance). Does such a thing exist anymore? What I wouldn't...

Did "Stereophile Guide to Home Theater" just have it's soul sucked out?

The new issue came in the mail today. It's now called "Stereophile Ultimate AV". The first chance I noticed is the tabloid style headlines on the cover. SHAKE THINGS UP - SUBWOOFERS TO ROCK YOUR WORLD 5.1 VS 7.1 - THE GREAT CHANNEL DEBATE Oh brother. Article headlines and...

You want a fast car, right?

What I find incredibly distubing is that this seems to have been coughed up by some sort of automated speeding detection system. What is this... a radar and a camera parked by the side of road? Go zipping by and get a ticket in the mail? -Steve

    Msn's Idea Of Home Theater

What frightens me most when I read an article like that is that it makes me realize that I can hardly trust ANYTHING written by even what are supposed to be professional news organizations. I see this all the time. When I know a thing or two about the subject, there are usually holes (or at...

CC closing 19 stores, one of wich was mine.

One word.... DIVX. I, and a whole generation of early DVD adopters, haven't shopped there since. They tried to kill our beloved DVD and keep it for themselves with their twisted pay-per-view scheme. It saddens me none to see bad things happen to Circuit City. I feel bad for the people who...

2003-2004 NFL Season (Playoffs and coaching moves)

I'll be at home watching in HDTV on the 50" DLP with my folks and a couple of friends. As far as the quality of the Patriots this year (since so many seem to think that they're a mediocre team), they're 9 and 0 against teams with winning records this year. I'm not sure when the last time...

Sunglasses - I need some good ones

For the past 15 years or so, I've been wearing the same type of Vuarnet sunglasses (2 pairs of sunglasses, but exactly the same). Well, my last pair fell victim to the recent cold (in my coat pocket, leaned into the car... and snap!). So I'm in the market for a new pair of shades. I don't do...

2003-2004 NFL Season (Playoffs and coaching moves)

I was at the Patriots / Titans game. Oh baby was it cold! I bought a beer just before game time... it had turned to slush before I finished it. The temperature was -1 F (-18 C) at the end of the game. The Patriots won the game the way they won a lot of games this year. By having thing happen...

What Bands/Solo Artists have you seen live? :)

Wow, reading this thread made me realize that I saw my first show over 20 years ago (The Kinks in '83). Yikes. Anyway, I've seen hundreds and hundreds of concerts since then, so it would be far too many to list. Some noteable ones... U2 (about 20 or so times). The best show was the night...

    Any Bowl games in HD??

That's the only one I've found too which I find to be amazingly lacking. Unfortunatly, it seems to be an artifact of simply not having enought HD broadcast trucks to handle the NFL playoffs as well as the college bowl games. Ah well, not that I should care anyway. The BCS is a farce. On a...

Pixies and Sonic Youth news from Billboard

Drool.... I anxiously await ANYTHING either of these bands ever puts out. They're both among the most influential bands of all time and both receive very heavy playtime in my car and in my home. -Steve

*** Official THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS Review Thread

Better late than never... I finally got around to seeing this. I'd give it 2.5/5 (the first two were 5 and 4 respectively). I found it to be a bit of a cop-out given the build up of the first two. It didn't really leave me thinking and wondering and pondering at all like the first two did. It...

    "DVD Rot" problems

Sorry to open up an old thread, but I figured this was a good place... My wife picked up "Barbara Taylor Bradford's 'A Woman of Substance'" (the mini-series from ~1984 with, among others, Liam Neeson) on DVD and disc 2 seems be to be delaminating from the center. You can clearly see that the...

    Panasonic DMR-E80 and Mini-DV

The E100 is just coming out and it has both a hard drive and firewire. The firewire wasn't an issue for me, so I just ordered myself up an E80 from 6th Ave Electronics. -Steve

    Satellite TV

My DirecTV system works fine in the rain unless is about to downpour. And then its usually only for a few minutes. It has more to do with the thickness of the rain cloud that's coming than the amount of rain that's currently falling. I find it to be a minor issue at best with the pros far...

New Sony Grand Wega LCDs or Samsung DLP

Gotcha. I guess I didn't realize that there were new ones. Sorry. Anyway, I've got a Samsung DLP on order, so take my advise with a grain of salt. I went with the DLP for two reasons... seemingly lower rate of stuck pixels, and better black levels. Sony's take on stuck pixels seems to be...

Can cable and dish co-exist in the same house?

What about a diplexer? If your cable is just analog cable, you should be able to use a diplexer to run both cable and satellite along the same coax. If you're going to do HDTV in one location, you should only need to bring in one coax from the dish (probably a Phase III triple-LNB dish)...

    Table-top Widescreens

I'll qualify this by saying that I have a Samsung HLN507W on order (DLP rear projection).... Well, with DLP there's a couple of clear advantages that I found... - Size and weight. For an equivalent screen size, you can get a much smaller and lighter enclosure. - No "burn in" meaning you...

    Table-top Widescreens

Take a look at one of the newer technologies... DLP or LCD rear projection. They typically come in much smaller boxes for the size of the screen. A CRT rear projector will typically be much larger. Samsung is the big name in DLP rear projection and Sony for LCD. -Steve

Best $300 DVD Player (Has To Be Silver)

Sony DVP-NS725P ($150) is one choice. Progressive scan, etc. It's a single disk player. They also have DVP-NC665P/S ($180). This is the 5-disk version. Also look at Samsung DVD-HD931 which has DVI output which might be a nice thing since your set has a DVI input. -Steve

Why are Americans so stubborn about $1 coins?

Ugh. At any given moment, I've probably got probably 5-8 $1 bills in my wallet.... maybe more. I can't even imagine lugging around coins instead. Too much of a pain. I've got no problem with $1 bills. The endless heavy coins is one of the things I hate about traveling in Europe. Now pennies...
