Having gone round to many friends houses over the years, all keen to show off their latest and greatest new DVD / BD / HD / 4K / Player / TV / Projector one thing remains consistent. The vast majority of people can't tell a decent / accurate level of picture quality and very few calibrate the...
As far as i'm aware all of the elements for the main Bronston epics (Fall..., El..., 55...& Circus) are all sitting in the same London vault that they have been for 40-50 years. The elements are apparently in comparatively excellent condition as the negatives have not been touched or re-printed...
These are two Russian financed masterpieces & given the current state of east west relations, the only way this is gonna happen is by them wanting to do it, there's plenty of Oligarch's who could help make it happen. It's an involved archival job as well as physical and digital restoration -...
No licence infringement comment was intended, apologies if you took it that way, I only mentioned Criterion as they have released it before & continue to release more Kurosawa's, than any other US label.

Unfortunately, this may be a very long wait, the fate of this and the Russian War & Peace are very much intertwined as both films 65mm O-neg's and soundtrack elements are sitting in various Russian state archives, and they currently have no 65mm 4K+ scanners, nor any intention to ship them...
Question for Mr Finn re: the original Planet of the Apes (1968).
The issue is that the sound, although advertised as 5.1, seems to be spread Mono. Chace did a true Stereo/ 5.1 re-mix a number of years ago, when this title eventually gets re-pressed/re-issued, could the correct soundtrack be...
Being such an expert on Fantasia's audio, i'm sure your aware that the 4 channel Stereo sound elements used as a basis for all mixes and editions since the mid 50’s were re-recorded in Mag Audio via telephone cable from Disney's offices using the Nitrate audio stems to a recording facility in an...
Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Sinbad & Eye of Tiger and Polanski's Macbeth, have all been remixed to Stereo /5.1 for BD release.
Exorcist has had several soundtracks over the years, the 1979 re-issue had a 6 track stereo / 70mm release, the current version on BD is yet another re-mix, based on 25th...
Just watching the set, the picture for the most part is outstanding, especially compared with what was available previously on broadcast/ dvd.
There is, however, serious issues with the sound on Series 1-3.
S1 was broadcast in Stereo, S2-3 both were broadcast in Dolby Surround, as per Dolby...
Sounds great Mr Harris, I do think it's a shame that when Original Stereo Music tracks are available, they are not used for an alternate Stereo re-mix track, especially if they are taking the time to transfer the picture at 2/4K - and are likely to be the last masters produced for these films...
Any news on this being released on Blu yet, i'm surprised they've missed the 45th Anniversary, given the love of 5 year re-issues, if they wait for the 50th they'll probably have to do it again in 4K!
Thank you once again for your hard work Mr Harris.
I'm intrigued, as the studio junked the DME tracks / sound recordings back in 1970 has every LP / Cd release of the sound track release since then come from a vintage LP master?
