Another option if your tight on space but not on budget would be a Bose 3-2-1 system....it is a small av control box with 2 speakers and a sub. It takes up very little room and if you not super picky about sound quality this little system will more than do the job for you...it creates 5.1...

I stream straight from my computer using server software such TVersity to my Network Media Player (Popcorn Hour) it works great. I use a Linksys EA4500 router, I'm sure your Netgear will do fine. My PC is also hardwired into my reciever via HDMI which gives me a media server on my main system...

I had the same basic wants that you have, I think you could get some good ideas from my site. I built a complete media solution like you want and it is easily expandable to any number of rooms and content is unlimited and very inexpensive. Let me know what you think...
