Mixing genres can be tricky, and in Phantom of the Paradise, writer-director Brian De Palma places the rock musical, horror, and black comedy genres in a blender and concocts an often trippy cross between Faust and Phantom of the Opera that did not connect with most moviegoers during its initial theatrical release in 1974, but has gathered a cult following over the 40 years since then.
