Fed Up Blu-ray Review

Weight. Are we too skinny, too fat, or just right? This is a topic that constantly is in the forefront of the media. One aspect of weight that can’t be denied is that Americans are getting fatter and fatter, with 1 out of 3 Americans being either Overweight or Obese. The creators of Fed Up aim to fix this growing epidemic with a documentary that is quite informative and well worth a watch for anyone who even slightly cares about their bodies.

The Production Rating: 4.5/5

We've all heard this before. America is getting fatter and fatter. Fad diets/exercise programs try to tell us that 'THIS PROGRAM' will give you that rock hard body you're aiming for with 'ONLY FIVE MINUTES' taken out of your day (oh yeah, you can also eat exactly what you want.) Instead of going down this often traveled road, Stephanie Soechtig (Director of Tapped) aims to tell us it's more the ingredients of what we're eating that is causing this epidemic.Soechtig begins with a simple statement - "1 out of every 3 Americans are either Overweight or Obese.' By opening up with this chilling statement, audiences are immediately pulled into what is ultimately a very informative 96 minutes of our lives. Soechtig doesn't simply blame one sole person or company, but rather one ingredient. SUGAR. She states a very scary fact. Why is SUGAR the only aspect of Nutrition Labels that DOES NOT have a Daily Value % next to it? Soechtig mentions that an average of 6-9 teaspoons of Sugar are the daily recommendations (ie 24-36 Grams.)Throughout the film, Scoechtig has a few great interviews, the best with Former President Bill Clinton, who openly admits that his administration failed in working on improving what kids are eating in schools (while I don't have kids myself, I find it appalling that children are eating Taco Bell, McDonald's and Pizza Hut for lunch.) This interview stuck with me, mainly because rarely do political figures ever admit that they're wrong. If Bill Clinton is open to admitting this failure, you know that the problem must be one worth addressing. Really though, Fed Up is well worth your time regardless if you have a ripped body, are overweight, underweight, obese, etc. This is a problem that needs conversation if it will ever be solved.

Video Rating: 3.5/5 3D Rating: NA

Anchor Bay’s Fed Up arrives on Blu-ray with a 1:78:1 framed, AVC MPEG-4 encoded transfer. While this was never meant to be that ‘demo disc’ you grab, Fed Up still offers up a solid transfer. Colors do occasionally pop (mostly those of the varying product placements found throughout,) while detail is rather standard (decent texture/facial detail.)

Audio Rating: 3.5/5

Fed Up features a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix with optional English/Spanish subtitles. As one might expect, this documentary offers up a good an experience as a documentary can. Dialogue is well reproduced throughout with no instance of drop out. Surround activity is mostly limited to that of music and discrete effects like that of background chatter.

Special Features Rating: 1/5

Deleted Scenes - 5 scenes are included:
  • Cooking with Dr. Hyman (4:17)
  • Ariel (3:55)
  • Nashwah (2:05)
  • Slotting Fees (1:24)
  • Hippocratic Oath (1:03)

Overall Rating: 4/5

While weight is a touchy subject, Fed Up offers up a simple solution - watch not only what you eat, but also what is actually in the food you eat. While the features are sparse, Anchor Bay's Fed Up is well worth a watch - regardless of how 'fit' you are.
