Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season One DVD Review

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season One walks its perps onto DVD with the first season of the Fox comedy featuring Andy Samberg. The 3-disc collection presents all 22 episodes in anamorphic picture and 5.1 sound, along with a generous collection of deleted scenes. The series is designed as an action comedy, with a decided emphasis on the comedy – as most situations are intended to showcase the stylings of Andy Samberg, fresh from his seven year run on Saturday Night Live. Fans of Samberg will enjoy this show, as will viewers looking for a more lighthearted approach to the onslaught of cop shows and procedurals filling most of the networks these days.

The Production Rating: 3/5

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season One brings the Andy Samberg police comedy to DVD in fine form. The series is designed as a vehicle for Samberg’s brash mode of straight-ahead comedy, placing his character of Detective Jake Peralta in a variety of situations where he can both find the funny and catch the bad guy. The series in general functions as a bit of an antidote to the usual police dramas and procedurals we can find on any network on any given night. And part of the charm here is that the writers here realize that the viewer has likely seen some version of these stories at least a few times on the more serious programs. It’s a nice tip of the hat that the creators chose to bring in Andre Braugher of the late, great Homicide as the no-nonsense, crusty-but-benign boss character, Captain Holt. Fans of Andy Samberg are clearly already enjoying this series, which is currently partway through its second season with no end in sight. As a side note, the episodes presented here of Brooklyn Nine-Nine won Golden Globes this year for the series (Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy) and for Andy Samberg. The DVD set includes all 22 episodes of the 1st season in anamorphic picture and 5.1 sound, along with deleted scenes for most of the episodes.

Video Rating: 3.5/5 3D Rating: NA

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season One is presented in an anamorphic 1.78 transfer that shows off a clear picture and accurate flesh tones. As usual, this is a perfectly acceptable standard definition presentation of the series, matching how viewers without HD reception will have seen the show.

Audio Rating: 3.5/5

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season One is presented in an English Dolby Digital 5.1 mix that focuses on the front channels, as one might expect with this kind of dialogue comedy. As we have heard before, the mix certainly is clear and the dialogue is easy to understand.

Special Features Rating: 2.5/5

DISC BY DISC:As I regularly do with TV series sets, I will use the Special Features section to describe what can be found on each disc, in order. The deleted scenes are all presented in anamorphic picture and 2.0 sound. These scenes can be accessed via the appropriate episode or via a “Play All” option for all the scenes found on each disc. There are chapters to each episode, but they are not in any menu, so you wind up needing to jump through the episode blindly to get back to a specific point.DISC ONE:Episodes: Pilot – The series begins with an episode that brings Andre Braugher’s Captain Holt into the Nine-Nine to whip it into shape. The Tagger, with deleted scenes (3:55)The SlumpM.E. Overall Rating: 3/5

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season One is a fun collection of the first season of the Fox police comedy starring Andy Samberg. The picture and sound quality of the discs is just fine, and most of the episodes contain a deleted scene or two for those curious about what jokes didn’t make it. The DVD set has been out since before the second season premiered, and most fans have likely already purchased it. For those who haven’t quite done so yet, this will make for a nice stocking stuffer.
